What reel??

Looking at new reels, lookin to get one for my 4wt, right now I have an old Orvis 1915R and its time to retire it. I want to spend under $200 bucks, I got a couple in mind, just seeing what everybody likes.  Krott

    krott,

I don't know prices at the moment.  Personally I love my Ross evolutions.  They were a bit over your price range, don't know if they have come down.

I also really like the CFO click and pawl which used to retail around $200.  Sweet reel for 4 wt and under.

Then for the price and what a 4 wt needs to be, the Tioga is still the buy in my book.  At a little over $100 last I checked, you can have a new reel, fully lined with a high end trout line, and still be under $200.  Tough to beat.

    thanks

Hard to beat a Ross.  The cimarron #1 is below your price range and comes in at 4.0 ounces.  Hard to find a lighter reel for the price.

I like the orvis clearwater. lightweight and it's easy to get another spool, just go to an orvis shop. you also can diconnect the noisy clicker and the drag still works. you most likely will eventualy want to use other types of lines with your 4wt. instead of another reel an extra spool is easier to carry and cheaper. having the ability to pick up one readily is why i chose orvis. ~dt

Ross Rythm.  I have had mine for 4 years now and put about 50 days a year on it.  It still performs flawlessly.  It has a very good drag, no startup inertia wahtsoever.  Its a nice looking reel also.

A couple of my friends own Ross Evolutions, it is a pretty similar reel to the rythm.  The main difference is the Evo has more extensive machining, making it a little lighter.  As far as the guts go they appear to be the same.  Rythm will be right at $200 and the Evo will be closer to $300.

Unless you have special plans for your 4wt, like using it for steel on a regular basis, I'd go cheap. I'm talking Okuma cheap.  I have an Okuma sierra 4/5 that I use on my 3wt rods for trout, I love it, it's really light and carries the line around for me, that's all I need it to do . I have caught big fish on it, steelhead, a few monster carp, and a few 25+ inch stockies.  It's not great when you have to fight a fish off the reel, but I get by with it.  The biggest problem with it is also the thing I like most about it. It's small so it doesn't take up line very quickly, but I want a small light reel on my 3wt because I'm not fighting fish off the reel very often with it.   If it's going to be a trout panfish rod this reel will work great.

I was thinking of Ross, simply cause there made in America and I know there made very well.  Stillhead, you make a good point though, there are a lot of cheap okuma's out there.  This would be mainly for trout and stripping them in, so no fights through the reel.  Thanks for the input guys.

The Teton Tioga in my opinion is the best buy under 200 bucks. I would bet just about anyone else who owns them would agree.  I think they are selling for around $140.

They are made in the US.

I agree with Still head, You really don't want to soak alot of money in a fly reel if there isn't any reason to do so, specially fishing trout. If your looking for a good descent reel, i would look at Ross you could get a Ross fly starter for around 40$  or a Ross fly cast for $60 or you could get a Ross flywater $100 it has a lifetime warranty on it. The others i do believe or 90 days!  I am not sure about Okuma i know way back in the day i fished Okuma spinning reels and i think they are garage just my two cents i don't know about there fly reels....Anything Okuma i tend to stay away from all together! I fish a 3wt for stockies and love it, it's 7ft makes it just perfect for the streams i fish for stockies........ And a 20 plus bow on the end makes for a great battle.....                                Centerpin_drift !

    Me too.

I use a $40 Okuma reel on my 4 wt for the past 6 years.  The drag is as clean or better as my orvis LA Battenkill.  Never had an issue with that reel, and it's caught plenty of 20"+ trout.

Steelhead reels, a totally different story.

Spend the money on a nice line, and gas on the way to the stream.

One thing to try to keep in mind, which I've been bad about, is to loosen your drag when storing your reel.

Lots of nice reels out there for around $100, i have the BBSII on my superfine, love it... $119 I believe. In all honestly, my pfluger on my 5wt is just as nice and cost half the price.

My buddy tom said it best ... "Why spend $400 on a reel to fight trout, its nothing but something to hold line."

I have the Vashon 5/6 for about 1 1/2 years now and have yet to have a problem with it. It definitely met my expectations. I just have the SLV 2/3 for my 3 wt and that has also done just fine for me.

I've had this old Teton Classic on my 4wt. for many years. I got it the first year they started production.
It's beat to hell but still going strong. I don't know what they cost now but back when I got it, If I remember correctly,  it was fairly reasonable.

Dan, I thought you hated that reel.  Maybe it was the paint or something.  I dunno.  Anyway, Krott, check e-bay for a Lamson LP series reel.  I've had an LP 1.5 for years.  A very traditional looking disc drag reel that works very well.  Makes any rod look better.

go to **** creek. I got a nice reel that weighs 3.16 oz and is about 40 bucks.  haven't had it that long though but nice reel and the drag is decent for an inexpensive reel.

The Madison River Fishing Company (www.mrfc.com) has a Lamson Radius Fly Reel for 4 weight line for $79.95 (original price $158.95).  I just purchased an 8 weight reel.  It's very nice.

the Teton kind of grew on me.
I guess their first run of reels had some problems with the finish flaking.
They said they would replace it but i decided to keep it.
It's been dependable and I think the chips give it a little character now that its older.

Lampson just came out with a less expensive reel, I think around $120.
    Lot of close outs around.
I think you'll see more as the year goes by. I have a feeling it will be a tough year for everyone. If you want to wait I'll bet you there will be very nice sales in August and September of this year.

I own both the Ross Cimmaron and the Teton Tioga.  To me it's a toss-up
as to which one I prefer.  I've had no problems with either reel.

I have a Ross Flywater 1 which I love. Paid about $79 for it a year ago, They are now about $90. I really don't see the need in paying more than $100-$120 for a four weight reel. Unless your targeting fish where your really going to have to utilize your drag your just throwing money away that could be spent elsewhere. I have used more expensive reels and I have caught big browns with them and the Ross I am currently using now and can't see a difference except one cost $79 and the other cost $250.

    Good Luck!

Anything by Ross is going to be a safe bet, and the ones they make overseas are really cheap. I have Redingtons, Tiogas and Ross's on my trout stuff, but if i was buying one today I would probably go with the new Lamson Konic.
