LOWER UNIT LUBE

can somebody tell me, when changing the oil in the lower units of my outboards, I have to start at the bottom port and pump the oil up until it comes out the top port?  I have older outboards and there's about a 10 inch space between ports, so why can't I squeeze the lube in from the top?  if it must be done from the bottom up, where can I find a pump to fit the top of the lube container?  thanks

Spinning the prop while filling the oil will help pump out some air pockets.
