Lowrance elite 5

Any info on this unit? Pros or cons? thanks!

I have two elite 5 units in my Ranger. Both have been good units and have not had any issues. I got these units when I sent my old eagle units in for warranty work and Lowrance sent me these in return.
 
It has taken me a while to learn the new buttons, as they changed the layout from the classic button configuration, a little PIA.
 
When I compare them to the eagle units they replaced I found them to be faster and more clear with the sonar graph once I set the sensitivity where I like it, and quicker to find the boat with the gps and more accurate.
 
Dropping way points is a little more of a hassle, this stems back to me being use to the old button setup. But overall pretty good units for me, for a nice workhorse unit I would defiantly buy them.
 
My best tip for anyone would be wire a on/off switch to fully cut the power to the unit when not in use. It sounds dumb but sometimes my old eagle units would turn on all by themselves and kill a battery. So ever since I have all my electronics on their own switch's so that cant happen.

Yup I have it, give me a shout if you wanna come over and check it out im not sure where your from. I live in Irwin.. Like I said though for the money you cant beat it.. When I went over a school of perch the screen lit up black lol.. It picks up the bottom bigger structures but im not sure if it would really pick up mud or rocks but I don't know the unit very well myself

Keep it simple or be prepared to study the manual. Fancier units are nice but getting them figured out can be a pain...

He like Raymarina ;) for the price nobody can beat it. But yes its confusing as hell until you get use to it. Which I haven't. Ed

I have two on my boat, but they are both a little older now, one color Lowrance  LCX 13 and a smaller Eagle FishElite 480. I would think that the one you originally posted about would be similar to the 480 only upgraded and it should do just about everything you need out there. Raymarine came out with a new Dragonfly this year that looks pretty interesting, www.defender.com has some good prices on them.
I was maybe a little harsh with the manual comment, but there are a lot of guys that get fancy units and have no idea how to operate them. What ever you get, read the manual and you'll get the most out of it...
 
The thing about Erie is that there is virtually no cover or structure especially when eye fishing or perching... If you're looking for smallies that may be different...

Most manuals suck for electronics, just take the manual with you on the lake and read it while the fishing is slow. I've always found that it's easier to figure them out on the water rather than in the driveway or living room...
