carps

Finally spent a day targeting carp at a lake I've always wanted to. Did pretty well with all 4 fish looking to be at least close to 10lbs. The one with the hunch back I'm pretty sure was darn close to my pb of 17lb(weak I know).

Its a 9' med riversider steelhead rod. It's my spoon chucking, high water rod. Works about perfect for carp I think.

Nice. I use a similar Diawa wilderness steel head rod for close quarters stuff. Hard to beat a steel head rod for versatility.

Well I caught and released my biggest carp ever yesterday And it just happened to be my first mirror ever. Caught it in a Westmoreland county stream that was a little high but perfectly fishable. It put up a great fight in the strong current, even running my into a snag at one point that amazingly I was able to horse him out of with 20lb braid. Fish was about 30" but it's girth was awesome approximately 20 lbs. And of all the days to forget my phone at home, no pics....

Landed 2 about 3-4lbs and one about 8 lbs, and a monster creek chub on corn yesterday. Broke 2 off in the rocks. Also caught a few frisky trout and some panfish while I was waiting for the carps.

I thought the same thing, but I didn't want to run back to my car to get my bucket. Next time I go there though I'll have it. That creek chub was a monster too, probably 8"

Not sure if we are talking about the same place. I see you are from Irwin so I assumed you are talking about the Sewickley creek that goes through the outskirts of West Newton.

Caught a dozen carps between me and a buddy in a little over 3hrs yesterday near an Allegheny river dam . All small though, biggest was about 9lbs smallest probably only 2lbs. Also caught Couple smallies and a channel cat on creek chubs and a jig.

Cool stuff.. A friend got me back into carp fishing about 4 years ago. Always did it when I was a kid and my goal 4 years ago was the fly rod. I got a perfect trib that feeds the Hudson River behind the house and know there are brutes in there.
Well first year was all about learning. I could easily sight them and wading was easy. Basically it was just casting practice that first season. Tried a Spey , a 8,7,5 and even a 4wt but couldn't figure out how to get them to take the fly. After research I found what was wrong. They have to be actively feeding ( mudding ) not just cruising.
Second season was a score... First fish was on the 7 wt and using a heavy weighted clouser bouncing a bit to stir the bottom and bingo fish on. I started to get greedy and took the 4 wt out for a whirl. Holy cow I thought the rod was going to explode but managed to land 2 carp in the 10 lb range. . Fun stuff but after then I stuck with the 7 wt.
Last year somehow time slipped by and didn't get out much for them . No fish caught in only about 2 outings.
Now comes 2013 and my friend has been slamming grass carp upwards of 45 lbs on his hot spot pond. Hum
Just when I thought things were about ready on my crik the wettest most rainny season ever happens. Since the last week in May the crik has been very muddy making sight fishing impossible. Couldn't take it any more so I went down with that little 4'6" micro rod and bread.
Wasn't long and the rod was doubled and line peeling. That fish made several strong runs and almost spooled me a few times but finally he was mine.. A solid 15 lb came to the net.
Well this past week or so it has been dry and I was excited about taking the fly rod out after the graveyard shift ( my last night ) tomorrow morning. Don't you know it's been raining hard with flash flood warnings I will go see but sure it will be muddy and the carp will be safe.

Carp fishing is a blast, light tackle is a trip with them.
Have fun and keep the pics coming. I will dig some out when I get home ..
Right now I'm stuck at work and bored as heck so again the pictures you folks post makes thing way better

I will most certainly keep em coming. I'm fortunate enough to know of at least 3 or 4 places with a good chance at sight fishing them. Ponds lakes rivers and streams. I haven't sight fished them much so far this year, but hope to change that very soon.

Btw tuna, if your little creek is blown out, it might still be worth taking a look. As with allot of fish they'll sometimes push up into the real shallow edges or flooded grass. just like red fish at high tide. You may not be able to see into the water, but you may catch a tail poking up out of the water.

Sorry to be vague, but people tend to b!tch when this spot gets talked about cuz it's already crowded enough. There's enough carp in the rivers that you can honestly do that good anywhere with the right bait and tackle.
