Alaska

Hoping to go to AK. this summer. Any advice from fellow anglers on what to see and what to stay away from (tourist traps/ripoffs).

This is our first time going and want to make it count. Fishing will take up half the trip of two weeks. Sight seeing the rest.....OTH

Pick up a travel book called milepost. Your find all kinds of info on food to places to see and stay from that. Are you going w/ a private guide system, on your own or a mix of both? And where are you thinking of going?

There is a large expanse of area to cover and don't try to do it in one trip. Give yourself time to enjoy the areas your hitting. Don't figure on making a distance of 50mph, your going to hit trailers and rv's. My wife and I did the southeast for the first week and the kenei for the 2nd. The 1st week we had reservations, the 2nd we stopped on the way and found a place to stay each night.

pick up the milepost it is a great help, I was there this past end of august
& the first 11 days of sept & we rented a car & a cabin & it was good
but the last 8 days we rented a motor home & it was great, all the
streams have camp grounds or there was one close to the area we
fished,, hope this helps, if you want more info let me know   Dave

hoping to go the mid to end of july, me and my better half. would like to do it on our own, be flexible without a schedual. Seems like the right time of the hit to have the most action for runs of fish, maybe the end of kings though. Looking for a place on the water (lake or river), with full accomodations. Want to go for halibut also. Fed Ex the fish back to my kids. My dad did that years ago and it was fantastic Halibut.  Never had any since that tasted that good. I would like to get a guide for a salmon trip. Kenai Penn. seems to offer a lot of options. OTH

If I were to go again it would be in August. That way I could get into silvers and reds. The pinks will be running this year in the kenai pen. and from what I hear the creeks will be loaded with them. Be very careful fishing on your own. Every creek and creek section has different regulations on bait, hook style, species, etc etc.
We flew to Wolverine creek and thoroughly enjoyed it. The mouth was packed with reds and the bears were coming down off of the hill to feed on them. It was an expensive trip and there were many boats there but watching brown and black bears catching salmon 40-50 feet away was very exciting. Go to Homer for halibut. Expect your average catch to be about 20-30 lbs. The Kenai fjords cruise out of Seward is something you should look into also.

Give yourself an extra day for homer spit, when you get there your know what I mean. We got there and thought of we're home and started looking for a place to live, then the winter idea hit and that changed quick. Your enjoy homer, lots of small shops and fishing of any style you like. The head boats leave out of there, and your find small day trips to outside areas by boat for salmon at other rivers. Have a drink at the Salty Dog, fun place.

2 months isn't enough time to see it all. Take the cell phone w/ you it will work there, but talk to your ph.co. to see if any extra charges come in.

We went in august, 4th fished sterling creek: milepost 44-43(sockeyes and dollies),5th-6th fished anchor creek: mp160 (kings and pinks), 8th fished kenai river w/ alaska river co.in copper landing mp 50 sterling highway(dollies, rainbows and sockeyes) This was out of a drift boat, had the boat to myself and was 125.00 for the whole day, lunch inc..

There are rivers though out the area, stop and look, read the regs and fish. Stop at a local tackle store and pick up the tide charts from them, these will help at the tidal end of the rivers, fish the incoming.

Salt, that sounds dirt cheap! $125 a day is from what I'm hearing a great price.

Going down the road and fishing as I go is the way I'd like to go. Free and easy.
I've been looking at Kodiak Island for a small trip and It's pretty pricey there. Cheapest I found was $1400 p/p for 4days/nites. There's a lot of questions I have for them, they're website is a little vague.

The main problem w/ kodiak is the travel times and days are limited.

there is a book that you can pick up to help the effort; the highway angler by gunner pedersen. The edition I have is from copyright of 1992.This one will give you info of the roads/rivers and rivers around each of them.

I was there in 96 and heres some other info that may still be printed today. I have a single copy of the anchorage news paper and section c had the different fisheries listed w/ their fishing ratings and rivers that the fish are in and a map w/ the river locations. you should be able to contact them and get a copy of the paper as the time comes nearer to your getting there.

Your be able to find a day trip or two out of homer and homer spit area for salmon across the bay.

Flatfish, great pics! I thank you for sharing.

I've been banging away on the computer trying to get as much info as I can. We kind of, sort of, maybe have rough idea of what we're gonna do.

Really want to go to Kodiak Isl. If I don't, got a feeling I'll be kicking myself for the rest of my life.

Salt, I can see what you mean by travel times to Kodiak. Looking into just flying from Anchorage to Kodiak. Then, back to Anchorage to rent a car to explore the Kenia Penn.

Thanks guys, keep the info coming, there's a lot to plan for. OTH

Gents: Rental cars seem pretty pricey, did you rent in advance or rent locally when you arrived?

I think going on half day trips/charters will work out best for us. The wife doesn't want a "total" fishing trip. She said if that's the way it will be I can go myself. HHHHMMMMmmmm......

The train up to Denali from Anc. looks like a nice trip. It's running about $139 ea. way, pp. about $80 pp. for the retun by coach. OTH.
