PLANER BOARD RELEASES

Switching to 10 color lead core on a couple of my planer board rods this year and was wondering if the non-adjustable releases that I'm using now are strong enough or do I need to get the adjustables?  My non-adjustables are pretty tight, but that's judging them based on their performance with standard mono/fluoro lines and no lead core. Thanks

I use the pilgrim pinch pads for EVERYTHING...  5,7,10 color, Tru trip 50's and flat lines with RRs.  They work great!!! There not adjustable and I never have a problem with them.  On those rough days I use either a rubberband and the pinch pads or just rubberbands with shower curtain ring.  Not sure what releases your using, but like is said mine are not adjustable.

    Hey Rough House,

Sorry to get off topic, but I recall a discussion a while back about the brand of rubber bands that you guys buy in bulk at the office supply store.  Can you please refresh my memory as to what brand / size they are?
    Thanks

We use office max brand rubber bands #16.  Kenny from buckets pointed me in this direction and they are better than others ive used.  Heres a link to that post. http://forums.fishusa.com/tm.aspx?m=473166&high=rubberbands

    Office Max - Size 16

We use a homemade version of the Weldon Release(pictured below)

My advice is lose the shower curtain hook and replace with #5 or #6 Duolock snaps.

    Thanks Ken.
also there website doesn't list them as #16.  It just gives general sizes. you have to go to the store and look for them labeled #16

    Heres a pic.
You can catch them on ebay once the season gets going.  Also most of the ohio bait shops carry them.  They might have them in stock now but I always buy mine from ebay. The one thing I like about them is there really light. So when you got a bunch of them down at your board it doesn't drag as much as others ive used in the past.  Those ones Kenny posted work great too.  I haven't used there homemade version but ive used the weldons and they work great.

Do you guys use the rubber bands on your down riggers too?  Would those size 16 work too?

    Pork,
I started using rubber bands last year on my riggers and loved them! the stretch of the rubber band made it easy to read the rod and tell when a junk fish was on. Ive also heard that using a snubber instead of a wire to attach your release to the ball will give them same effect.

    Thanks Drummer,
I have a set of down riggers that came with my boat, and never used, since I don't brave Erie on it.  I'm going to give a shot this year.  I didn't want to buy new releases, if I end up only using 2-3 times...

I myself don't use rubberbands on my downriggers. I use the chamberlain downrigger releases. Also another one to consider is black releases.  Ive heard there really good too. Im sure I could use rubberbands, but the adjustment you have using chamberlain or blacks there is really no need for it.

Thanks Kenny and Rough House for the band info. Office max had a good supply of the big bags of #16's and they were 20% off!

Just make sure you don't take the whole bag on your boat.  They dry rot and get weak soon after there in the sun and elements.  I made the mistake of taking a brand new bag on the boat and after a day of fishing in hot july weather the bands turned brittle. So now I take a couple of handfuls of the bands out of the bag and I use a container (like one that icing for a cake comes in) to store our rubberbands.  Sunlight and water cant get in and I try and keep it out of direct sunlight.  Its worked great so far.
