Lead core line
was wandering if you can put lead core on a spinning reel? Never used it before and thought of getting some and i have two bigger spinning reels that i dont use so i wouldn't have to buy a new set up.

Might work but the way you spool the line may cause issues later with kinks. I personally have never seen it done or even heard of it being done but that's not to say it can't be done. Try one to see how it works. I doubt that you could very many colors on one with any amount of backing but hey, go ahead and try and post your findings.

I've never used lead core as a main line before, just for leaders. It seems like it would slow down and shorten your casts. I could be wrong. I'm just guessing. Not being as supple as mono or even braid might cause more friction going through the guides. You might be able to compensate by wetting your spool before casting, but you may still have issues with kinking.

flyingmoles It seems like it would slow down and shorten your casts. Never thought of casting when I read walleye24j's post but part of what flyingmoles said would be true but I doubt that you could even cast it anyway. The line would be too stiff and heavy. If you are planning to troll with it, then you might be able to use a spinning reel. If you could get 50' to 100' of backing and a couple or three colors of lead core along with 8' to 25' of leader, you could possibly troll by letting the line go straight out of the reel. I would think though that you would have to have some pretty BIG spinning reels even to get that much on. Good luck and let us know if you can get something to work.

Spinning reels "spin" the line onto the spool. If you've ever twisted leadcore you know that "spinning" and "leadcore" are words that should NEVER be used together. EVER!

I don't know what you mean by lead core, but if you're talking about kinks in your line, there's things you can do to stop it. Bill Dance had and episode, not long ago. You can look it up on his site. Kinks happen when you allow slack in your line. This happens after you cast and to much line comes out. When you close the bail, loops form in the spool. Bill said, to hold the line then close the handle. Another thing to do, when you cast, place your finger on the spool to stop it. It'll eliminate slack build up. If this isn't what you are referring to, my bad.

Lead core line has a core of lead inside of a nylon sheathing. It is used for trolling stick baits to get them deeper. It is segmented in different colors. Typically, 10' per color. Each color roughly takes the stick bait an extra 5' in depth. It it solely used for trolling and will kink because of the inner lead core. Too heavy to cast but it I suppose it could be used on a very large spinning reel for trolling if you play the line out carefully. Usually, you spool it on reels specifically for used for trolling.

It could work for trolling. That's way outside my experience with lead core. I've used it to pin my line out of the way of spooky carp. I've never used more than 10' or so at a time. Can't say I really knew what it was used for beyond using it for carp in rivers and sandy lake bottoms. Trolling with it never even crossed my mind.

Leadcore line was originally designed for trolling. Its designed to be used with a levelwind or centerpin (mooching) reel and is a VERY effective way to get a bait to certain depths.
