If you're going to do less than three lines per side on the boards, I'd just stick with the inline boards...would just be easier on an 18' boat.  The downside would be the inability to run deep divers with weight and/or heavy leadcore setups.

I run mainly big boards, but when I just want to run a couple lines outside, then I'll just throw on an inline.

An 18 foot boat is not too small to run big boards.  However, you wouldn't want to run hard pulling boards like Aurora lites, or Amish Outfitters.  Otherwise the boards would be steering the boat rather than the other way around.

The Church TX44's will pull anything you would want them to pull.  On the other hand, those boards fight harder than the walleye do.  I have 4, but IMO they pull too hard for an inline.  The Church "walleye boards" will pull clean reef runner 800's, 3 or 4 colors of LC, and barely a 30 jet.

Ditto on the hard pulling boards like auroras and amish, definitely made for larger boats. My 18 ft. Grumman pulls big mast boards just fine.

I have an 19 foot boat and I prefer big boards over inlines any day.  I dont like a 12 inch chunk of plastic being attached to my line when I'm trying to get a fish in.  Although they do have their time and place: using inline weights at slow speeds or if you only want one or two lines out.

Riviera or Walker plastic, collapsible boards seem to work pretty well on smaller boats:

    Just my 2 cents:

I've owned (2) 19ft boats and fished with mast style planers on both.  I now use the Amish Outifitters Azek [Composite/Plastic] and they work great.  Like the others mentioned, they do pull like a mule.  Once you have them both deployed it's not too bad, but they do act as a rudder when setting them out.  It takes a bit of work to crank them in and they do put alot of stress on the mast.  So if you use these or the Aurora's make sure your mast is reinforced or robust enough.

On the flip side, I have run the dual ski collapsable boards [Riviera] and there is no comparison.   The Riveria's suck if you plan on fishing any heavy lines or more than 2 lines a side.  They do work decent on flat water; but not many times will you have that on Lake Erie.  I modified mine by adding ballast weights & rudders and they still did not pull to my liking.  That's when I decided to sell them and upgrade.

Again, the deciding factor would be on your intended applications.  Like others mentioned-if you only plan on running a few lines on each side and or no weighted/dipseys/40 or 50 jets you'd probably be fine with the collaspable plastic ones.  If not go for the Amish Outiftters or Aurora Lite ones.   That is if you are intent on purchasing a set-many guys make there own.  I personally didn't have the time or tools to invest in making my own set....

    Matt,
I wasn't impressed with how your old Rivieras pulled either, but my buddy eyedreamn has a triple set of Rivieras that pulls pretty well for a plastic collapsible set.  Also, my Aurora lites were too much for my 19.5' aluminum except when it was calm.  The wave surge yanked my bow all over the place.

I use a homemade set on my 19.5 foot aluminum and they pull perfect for the boat.  I made them from 1 x 8 pine and have been fine tuning them for a few years now to where they finally pull exactly how I want.  They pull hard enough that I broke the handle off my big jon reel pulling them in while trolling last year and they broke my planer line once...but they to dont pull my bow all over the place.  I drilled a few different holes for the eye bolt and experimented with it all year until I finally got it right.

Don't forget to check out Paul's Planers.
I was very surprised by their performance.
