Starlings

In the march issue of Fly Fisherman they talk about using starling feathers. My qeustion is how do you preserve the cape?

    Moth Balls or Cedar chips for the bugs.

    the smell quickly disapates and the trout don't seem to mind.

    I have had no problems with smell issues. I will suggest to all  this- take a piece of moss/plant in the water and rub it on the fly before fishing it to remove outside scent, and add stream smells. I do this always, and believe it helps.

    Never tried this myself with the capes I have dried.  In regards to the insect problem, I heard that nuking them in a microwave for 5 seconds will do the trick.
    I'm not going to put the in MY microwave.

    An excellent resource I came across for preserving feathers and other materials is the book: "From Field to Fly: The Fly Tier's Guide to Skinning and Preserving Wild Game" by Scott Seymour.  It's an excellent book that breaks down all the steps for you.  I haven't had a chance to use if for feathers or capes yet, but have followed the instructions for small game & some other things.  And just so you know, it's about $10, so not expensive at all, and easily attainable for amazon.com or probably even ebay.  Enjoy!

    this is a quick way to preserve your cape, have'nt tried it on feather's, but have tried it on rabbit's and squirrel's and it work's very well.get some spirit's of mineral oil place your cape in jar cover with spirit's, leave in jar for three day's, shake jar  once a day, and make sure everything is covered, after three day's remove from jar and rinse under warm water, let dry and dust it with borax.when i do rabbit's and squirrel's i rub the flesh side with neetsfoot to keep it soft.
