who's been thinking about grannoms?

I did yesterday.  I got out some flies, looked at them and thought about tying up a few wets.  Though I never got around to it.  I was too busy doing nothing!!!

We should all try to get together for the grannom hatch some spring morning.  The way I see it, a full blown grannom hatch will be big for about 4 mornings.   What you think ?  Last year, it was a Monday - Thursday, I think.  Maybe the hatch will show up for a weekend so a bunch of people can attend.

We should definitley meet up for the grannoms. Even if we miss them, the little black caddis are just as heavy and tie into the end of the grannom hatch. They last a while longer than the grannoms.

I have always heard alot about the hatch.....never fished it.  Now that I live here I would definately like to try to hit it.

Anyone have any good recipes for the grannoms?

I was planning on doing a tutorial of a wet fly once I get around to it.  I think i tie them in size 14.  Green butt for the egg, then use peacock herl or peacock herl dubbing for the body.  Wrap it to the front then make a wrap or two with a hungarian partridge feather.   You can use other hackle too.  I prefer the HPF.

You'll hear us talking about it here once the time comes.  There'll be one or two of us checking the lower river daily when April rolls around.  The hatches on the J start down there and work their way up so they'll be one or more of us fishing it each day.  If not, Allan at SCO will keep us filled in.

Personally I'm awaiting the Little Black Stonefly. They start in Feb. around here on a mild & sunny day.
The old fellows call them March Flies. That's when thet are on. The best Dry Fly action of the year on my local Spring Creeks if you ask me.
The Black Caddis are around here too in certain places. The prob. with them is there are Black Caddis, Brown Caddis, Hendricsons and Grey Fox's coming off about the same time. Makes it difficult to say the least.
Sorry- didn't mean to steal the thread. I've never fished Grannoms, but I'm never one to turn a good Mid. Morning, or afternoon hatch..

I think we have the same here, not real intense but I couldn't tell you for sure.  Drake would know.  I wouldn't mind doing some fishing then.  I usually don't start fishing for trout until the grannoms.

    Exo--

Here is a tutorial, actually by a guy on this site.   I attach the wet to the dry.  The last picture is the one I was describing.  We DO actually have a black caddis hatch that starts near the end of grannoms.  I was just picking on drake.  They are smaller, like 16-18's I think.

    My favorite grannom pattern is:

standard dryfly hook 14 or 16
    Natural cdc wing
    black dubbed body
poly or z-lon shuck trailing behind

this pattern looks a lot like the grannoms that are just coming out of thier clear shuck on or near the surface of the water. Trout really seem to key in on that stage.

We do have the same here. The little black caddis are just as fun as the grannoms IMO. There are some other hatches that come off the same time, but they arent as prolific.

grannoms dries.  i tie them with a black fine poly body and bear hair for the wing. tie in like a caddis. #16-#18. standard dry hook. just my 2cents.

for an emerger i use the same material, only tie in the wing (bear hair) tips facing the hook eye. wrap the thread 1/3 way back from the hook eye. fold the wing tips back and wrap overtop the pulled back wing at the 1/3rd  point and tie off there. the head looks like a bullet. i use this as a dry fly on the way down stream. when it gets near the end of the drift i twitch it to make it sink and then bring it in like an emerger lifting my rod tip. i do this with caddis flies also when i think the trout are hitting emergers more than the dries. i tie some of these in #14's also
