Birds

My uncle is in the process of training his hunting dog, and over the year he will probably go through 100 chucker partridges, along with maybe 20-30 phesants.  I am planning on having him send me the phesant tail, but what part of the partridge is used for soft hackles?  I would appreciate any help.

Chuckers are not used that much in fly tying.  Usually Hungarian partridges are used for the soft hackle type flies.
Ask him to skin one of each of the birds.  I think you'll find that the pheasant has more uses than the chucker.

I knew it was a form of partidge, I thought chuckers would be ok, but that is fine I will have him send the Phesant tails.  Thanks for your help.  If you do come across any uses for the chuckers, please let me know.

Live birds are hard to get ahold of this time of year. Im taking my dog to a hunting preserve this summer. I figure, if i gotta drive to it to buy the birds, miles well pay $30 and use the couple thousands of acres they got. Ill prob bring a couple home too, just for somthing to do.

Do you know where he gets his birds? Prices? Last I checked a chuckar was about $8 this time of year.

I think he pays around $6 for a chuckar and $8 for the pheasants, yet he can get pigeons for $1 each.  He lives in western Md, and I do not know who he gets his birds from.  Expensive, but it's all relative when training a $1,000 dog I would have to say.  If you are truly intersted, I could find out who he gets them from.  The pigeons are from a friend of his(a fellow club member), so I could not get you them for $1.  He is a member of Isacc Walton in Md., if you are familliar with the club.

Sounds like he gets a pretty good deal, but the shipping would kill the benefit for me. Live pidgeons for a $1 is pretty good. Ive been pondering buying a pidgeon trap and asking a farmer to let me use the barn.
