Some bodies of water do fall under Panfish Enhancement Regulatuions. Crappies must be 9 inches in length with a creel limit of 20, sunfish are also included and must be 7 inches long with a creel limit of 20.

A list of these bodies of water can be found in the Annual PFBC Fishing Summary.

    I hope this helps.

I do understand what your saying. I have seen small fish caught and kept. What in the world do you do with a 6 in. fish!

Have you ever seen the amish fishing. theyll keep anything bigger than the minis i use to catch crappie. also the chinese at lake arthur, ive seen the lady that has the chinese restaurant in butler keep a blue gill less than 4 inches long. theres rumor that she blends them up and mixes it with the chicken. they must have more motivation than me to sit with a magnifing glass and an exacto knife to fillet a piece of meat 2 inces long x 1/2 inch wide. i have a hard time enough just tring to hold onto a 7-8 inch panfish while tring to fillet it. to get back to topic, i dont care if they wanna keep them lil basturds. people keeping them lil fish arent gonna affect the quantity of panfish in a lake. the predator fish population in a lake affects panfish quantity and quality more than anything.

I've learned, over the years, to keep what i want and not worry about what other people keep, as long as they dont go over the limit. Fish commission knows whats going on and do nothing about it. You can yell and scream til you turn blue in the face. Until THEY decide to do something about size limits or quantities, i just do MY thing.

Arthur had a 10 fish (panfish) limit for a few years. It didn't pan out the way they thought. I couldn't see em goin from  50 to 10 but 25 seemed like a better number to me. A lot of the panfish guys headed to Wilhelm instead.

I too think 25 is a good number. And 9" fish at shenango are good eaters. They have some fat fillets.

I'm not an expert, but I believe the reason they don't is panfish can overpopulate a lake and stunt each others growth.  I've only ever fish 1 lake (cross creek) that had panfish size limits.  I don't fish there often enough, but it seems to me that it's hard to find a crappie over 10 or 11" there, it's really easy to find crappies just short of 9 inches(the legal limit).  The bluegill there to seem to average larger than anywhere else I've ever fished.

I have an easier time finding big crappies 14" and up at lakes with no minimum size limit.   Whether or not the regulations have anything to do with that I don't know.    Anyway, I think they let you keep the little ones to make sure they don't overpopulate the lake, but who knows. I'm sure every body of water is different.

I'd never keep a gill under 7" and really don't like to keep them unless they are 8".

Crappies got to be at least 9",  gotta be a slow bite to keep them that small though.

As others have already stated, I have a self-imposed size limit. I don't want to sit and clean 6" and 7" fish. I think 9" for anything is the lower limit. More importantly, what's the thought on reducing creel limits during winter when fish are full of developing eggs? Ice fisherman have come along way with all the fancy electronics and can account for a lot of fish.  lou
