A little piece of history

7 years ago, my late uncle gave me a Remington Model 1903 .30/06.

Thanks to pghmarty with all his cool internet links, I did a little searching and discovered that the '06 was made in 1942. I'm sure that this was probably one of the first things my uncle bought for himself when he returned home from serving in WWII. I'm not sure if he had it sporterized, or if it was already that way when he bought it. When I got it, I had a new scope mount put on it and topped it with a Nikon Pro Staff. So, with all the piecemeal work done on it over the years, its value is in sentiment and functionality.

I've hunted off and on with that gun over the past 5 years, with no success. Until this evening. Right before dark, I dropped a nice doe at 40 yards. She took a few steps, did the death wobble, and was down for good.

I know it's only a doe, but it was a cool hunt for me to be shooting a piece of my family's history.

Tuna, that sling is just one I had laying around. It had an old leather strap that I took off.

The original scope mount was similar, off set to the side. When I got the gun, I took it to a gunsmith because the old mount wouldn't fit a modern scope. Rather than tap the receiver, the smith ordered this mount and used the original tap. Here's a few more pics of the mount.
