Auger Question

Wore my one armed jiffy out finally after 17 yrs. I am looking at the strikemaster 224 or the jiffy w/ripper blades or I can get the jiffy white lightning for cheap299.00. I want it fast and light.I want the light, because I lugged that 3hp around to long. I don't want to buy a dog either that can't handle 20 in of ice.

The ripper blades are more durable, especially if sand can get on ice or you could drill into a stump.  Drills like the 224 are much faster but much less durable.  I have used the Strike Lite and find it to be very fast, light and quiet.  They are pricey though.w_w.

The price is a joke on augers 500 bucks, I use them allot to. I put 4 gallons of gas in my old jiffy last winter. So I don't wan't a overpriced pos that will break two years down the road either.

i to am looking for a new auger. this time i'm going for weight rather than speed. with the amount of ice anymore, the season is short. i have researched every site i could find and there are stories(bad and good) on all of them. was at sportsmens warehouse and they have strikemaster(a couple of models) and eskimo/ardisam(a couple of models). i picked up the boxes of all the models and wow is the eskimo stingray light. the 1.2 hp has me leary(sp), but it is MUCH lighter than the others. the difference in $$$ is minimal from 1.2 hp to 1.8 to 2.0 hp($20-$70). 3 hp is not even a consideration(too heavy) and 4-stroke at $500 is not for me. if i drill a 150 holes a year thats a ton but still dont want the extra weight. sacrifice the extra weight for bigger motor or is 1.2 hp enough?

the viper motor is supposed to act like a chainsaw motor and rev at 8k rpms. not too sure about 33cc being enough though. anybody have experience with the stingray?

read on iceshanty.com that Trout-sen-sei has one and he loves it. still like your stingray?

I am going to stay away from eskimo my friend has one and I don't like it at all.  It wants to break your leg or spin you in a circle when it breaks through on thick ice, their slip clutch sucks.I thought it was bad blades hanging up so he got a new blade and no change.

    what did you decide on.

i really like the weight of the stingray but ordered the strikemaster mag2000. hope its as good as everybody says. $281 with shipping was the best price i could find. only $37 more than the stingray. i have never been a fan of tecumseh motors which is another reason i was looking at the eskimo.

doesnt matter anyway. $280 for the auger and spent another $150 on misc. ice gear. thats a recipe for no ice this year.

I live in an apartment building so i can't store a gas auger here. So i bought an Electra 2000 Strikemaster, 8" auger. It's the battery powered one. It cuts great and is super quiet BUT i dont get a lot of holes from the battery. Thicker the ice, less the number of holes. I never use it unless we get 6 or more inches. I'm going to try using a smaller auger attachment this year. Got a 6" while it was on sale last summer. Hoping to get more holes per battery charge. This setup can also be hooked to a car or marine battery too. That extra weight on the fishtrap pro is a bit much tho. May buy an extra sled just to carry the bigger battery and have someone else drag it out for US. With the built in battery, i can get MAYBE a dozen holes in 8" ice. More if thinner.

I have done a lot of research on which unit and pricing, and by accident discovered the Cabela's Retail stores from Hamburg to Wisconsin started a 25% off auger sale today thru Feb 3. That takes a little sting out of $4-500 for a drill.  But, drawback is the shipping. Only cheap option is select Free shipping from retail store to retail store, but may take 4 weeks to get there. Primarily, I found the stores carried either Jiffy or Strike Master models only. But, 25% off $500 gets you to $375 for the 4 stroke or high $200's for the better units in each of the lines.

Well the new jiffy stx 8in 2hp came in. It shipped from Wis to NY in three days and before the weekend. I put it to the test sat I put in over a 100 holes and it ripped through the 7in of ice in less then 2.8 seconds unreal!! The slip clutch works great you can hold on to it with two fingers when it breaks through. My girl friends son 12 wanted to try it, so I stood on one side and let him drill a hole or two he ended up drilling a 10 hole line by him self. Sunday I went to fill it and all the holes I drilled,it used less then a half of a tank of gas. If you are looking for a auger look at the stx unreal!!!

I bought the StrikeMaster Mag 2000 at gander mountain Mill Creek last week for $279.99 seems to work well, if I am not mistaken it weights 25#.
