Scissors

I've just started tying blood dots, nuke eggs, ect... I've tried three different pair of scissors and they all seem to be to dull to make a nice cut.  The most recent pair I have I got at Poor Richards about a week ago.  Already i'm begining to notice that thier to dull to cut the yarn.  It could be the fact that my vice is getting in the way and prohitbiting me from getting the scissors in far enough to make a nice cut.  Other than that I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to make this simple fly look perfect.

If someone has some tips on this problem i'm having I would appreciate it.  Also if you guys know of a good pair of scissors for cutting glo-bug yarn please let me know.

Thanks

Ed

W/ scissors like everything else you need to spend a reasonable dollar on them. Not knowing what pair you purchased and the quality of the metal of the blades, but go for a stainless blade models. .Try the local beauty supply place and take a bit of the yarn w/ you to try the scissors out on them. Keep in mind that the shears you use for yarn and thread should not be used for lead and metal tying materials. Even paper dulls the shears. I tend to have at least 4 pr of scissors used on the table.

Go to Wall Mart in the craft dept. You can get striate, or curved at a very decent price with good quality. Fly tying shears are excellent for feathers and thread but synthetics will dull the quickly by actually bending the two sides out. BTW get a set of toe nail cutters for cutting lead and wire. Save you shear's for the close feather work.

Serrated works for me and also makes sure you arent using to much yarn or you could have a 200 dollar pair and they turn to garbage after two dozen flys.

The last pair I got for egg patterns are carbide . They have a plastic cover to protect the tips and thats all I use them for. Their not cheep but hopefully they will last forever. I found out you get what you pay for when it comes to scissors. I also have a fine stone and sharpen my cheaper ones for regular fly tying.

There will be days when fishing is better than ones optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

Last year, I bought a pair of kershaw skeeter II scissors. I tie nearly 100 dozen flys per year, production and for myself, and they are still reasonably sharp. I think I paid around $27 for them. Dont skimp on your scissors, you definitely get what you pay for.

The fiskars brand of scissors has served me well - short blades and oversized grips. Usually there is a coupon in sundays paper from the craft stores to get 40 to 50% off any one. I think regular price is about $14-16.
