season so far

Duck hunting has been a little off for me this year. It seems that the wind is never right when I have a day off, or I make the wrong choice some way or another. So far I have 6 wood ducks, two blue bills, and a few buffies. Oh yeah, one coot...anyway I start a three week vacation on monday, after a little deer hunting I hope to get into some more ducks. Nothing like a vacation to get your hopes up. I would post some pics but it is too hard to resize them small enough. It would be nice if photobucket was supported...

If I agreed with you we would both be wrong

Shot a surf scoter today, first one I have ever shot. I guess they are not good table fare however. So it is destined for a batch of pepperoni....

Never seen one Don, where was that? There were a ton of mallards here a week ago but now they have moved on. The season opens here on the 10th. The lakes are starting to freeze so the river will get my attention. It may warm enough to open the lake up, will have to wait and see.

Saw a pile of ducks moving south this am while on stand.  Freeze up is getting close, so find open water and you will find ducks.

Good luck. Birds have pretty much vacated here. Goose will be my target.

Lake Erie, the bay is starting to ice up as well. Was going to hunt today but we were only prepared to hunt from a boat, and the marina was solid enough to walk on...

Big duck! Will go after geese tomorrow. Have a new lab that a friend could not keep and want to see if it will listen or not. Born on 9-11 2 years ago. Hopefully it will respond for me . If not , pups for Mika.

Got out Sat AM.  Mallards everywhere on the river.  Only problem is I couldnt hit them.  But I was able to smack on of the Geese that happened to fly over head.

Had ducks flying from daylight until 9 AM when I left.  The goose were actually roosted on the island I was hunting when i got there in the morning but as I apporoached the island they moveed down to the next when.  But when they flew off in the AM they flew right over my head.  Smack to the poor goose only problem was I was hunting the river and couldnt shoot any more cause I had to catch the dead one before the current took it away.

Will be back on them this Sat.

I have been to Pymy for Goose hunting twice, 2 of us first trip, 3 the second, never fired a shot, where are all the Geese, I have been hunting there since 1980, the only year I missed was last year, back in the 80's and early 90's the sky would blacken with geese the the sound was deafening, then there were supposenly 10.000 geese, now I don't think there is 1000, I know that they don't come off the lake until about 9 am, we stayed both times until the blinds closed, but not to many geese flew, hardly any shots came from the blinds, my only hope, since they are in until Jan. 5th is that Erie freezes over and the flight birds come down to pymy, then maybe the hunting will get better.

Yeah Pymy has realy been down in the number of birds the last few years.  I think they need to make some changes there.  But what changes I have no idea.  Just seems like the birds dont fly there or when they do they fly for a little while then back to the ground they go.  Maybe they need to change the blind hours? or change the areas.

I have hunted there twice this year also.  The first day (saw lots of birds and should have killed) and then I drew an unclaimed blind one day and never had a goose come close.  But did kill some ducks.

Gonna check it out again though before the year is out.  Maybe gonna hit Conneaut Lake this weekend sicne the river down my way is raging right now.

Good luck eating that scoter.  Cube it, boil it, its a lot of work.  The bill and the butterball won't be too bad though.

    Creel,
Go there around 2pm and the fields will be full of them. They know when shooting hours end. LOL
Went by there yesterday and they were all around the little pond by the viewing area &  none around the blinds with hunters in them. But today they were all around the blinds and even in the one hunter parking lot next to 285. They know what days are shooting days and which ones are not.

Vacation is over, duck hunting was spotty.  Between the fickle winds and some family problems I managed 10 or 15 ducks over the last couple of weeks. Did some deer hunting and a token small game hunt as well. Except for the family problems it was all good reguardless of the numbers bagged.

Bagged my first duck of the season (and of my life after 3 years of trying) yesterday morning.  Have missed many, many easier shots than the one I made yesterday.  My lab Hank saved the day though.  About halfway out on about a 40 yard retrieve (his first ever on a duck - although he got two geese earlier this year), the duck starts swimming away.  Took him out to about 60 yards, and the duck dives under water and it's gone.  Hank's like, "WTF?"  So, I called him back in.  We walked around the farm pond, and I don't see this duck anywhere floating.  I'm thinking it must have drowned itself or something, even though I'm thinking that would be next to impossible.  Even if it dies, it should float right?  So, we're walking along the far shore, about 120 yards from where I took the shot, and I turn around and wonder where Hank went.  He comes up out of the cat tails with the duck.  I would've walked right past it.  Thank God for his instinct and natural ability.

Shot 6 man limits on geese two days in a row last week.  Also shot a few limits of mallards.  Birds are everywhere. Its just going to get better.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.
