No title on the boat I bought. How do I make it mine for good?

I bought a 16' Crestliner off of a guy about a year ago. He said he would get me the title and that was the last I ever heard of him. It is a project boat and I have been putting off rebuilding it with my son because I would hate to put all that in and find out I can't use it. Or worse... Anybody that can help us out? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! P.S. the boat has been out of registration since 1978 if this helps. Thanks again.

Some states will issue a title to a vehicle with a notarized affidavit stating you own it.

I used this company when I bought an old Harley without title.

Walneck's cycle news magazine has ads for other title services that do this.

Another place I have used is Titles Unlimited in Birmingham AL 1 800 325 8136

First question - did you get a bill fo sale from him?
Second question - are you CERTAIN that the vessel has a title? If it was last registered untill 1978, it is an "old" boat. A boat that old may not have a title issued to it, I don't think the PaFBC issued titles prior to 1975 or so.

Did he at least give you the old "owners card"? If yes, look at it to see if there is a title number listed. - if no title number, all he needed to do was to sign the back of the owner's card to transfer ownership to you.

If none of the paperwork exists, call the PaFBC and tell them you want to claim it as an abandoned boat.

Go to your state reps office with any paper work. They will help you. Any state problems go to your state rep. It's free service.

I know boats before 1996 didn't require titles, 1997 and newer require a title after purchase. I would bet there was never a title for a boat of that year. On the owners card this is a space for the owner to sign the boat over to the new owner. If theres no owners card you would be best to contact the pfbc or a notary service or as stated a state represenatives office. Good luck in your endeavors!

i highly doubt there is/was a title. take the bill of sale(if you have one) with the owners name, address and telephone number and the vin(bottom right rear of hull/stern), and the registration numbers(if theyre on the boat) and go to a BOAT DEALER. they will fill out the proper forms and you should have no issue. you wont even need all of that but the more the better. just sayin'
