Hooks

What brand hooks do you guys use for Steelies? I was using some Daiichi's on Saturday and broke the first 3 I used on fish... Anyone else have this problem or was this a bad batch? I was using the scud hook (1x short; 1x strong).

I use red Gamakatsu hooks for single eggs, egg sacks, minnows, etc... But when tying flies I agree with Rtom45 - always use at least 2x strong.

Thanks. I normally use the Gamakastu hooks for bait and the Mustad hooks for flies, but happened to have these around. I wanted something a little smaller than I usually use with bait and these were the only size 14 hooks I had. I now know to hide them away for trout only.

Go with what Skip recommended.  I use a lot of Mustad 3399's.  They are not the best hook in the world, but they are inexpensive and usually hold up well.  I loose a lot of flies on rocks, trees, etc... so I figure, why use expensive hooks.  One thing about the 3399, I use them also for glo bugs and have used them for nymphs.  The nymphs are a bit on the short side, but will work in a pinch.  The trick is to tie the tail a little bit longer than you normally do.

I have even used #12 and #10 3399's for egg sucking leeches.  I tie a small glo bug near the eye, put on a long marabou tail and use leech yarn for the body or the typical chenelle body and hackle.  The idea is to tie the tail about twice as long as you would for a woolly bugger.  They look pretty neat in the water and when the fish are in the right mood, they gobble them up.  I like purple tails, black bodies and orange or light pink glo bugs.

    TMC 2457 for most patterns(scuds, glo-bugs, suckerspawn,ect...)
    TMC 5262 for most nymphs

Never had any problems with TMC hooks.
I have had numerous problems with mustad 3399 such as hooks missing barbs, missing points, and having open eyes from the factory.

I use Mustad hooks for Steelhead.
There is NO good reason for using expensive hooks. I usually loose flies on the bottom and usually never have one of them fail due to poor design or manufacturing defects. Keep your flies dry after a trip and you will see it is the wetness/dampness that causes the hooks to fail.
FishUSA has the best price on them;)

I also prefer the Gamakatsu....never broke one and they are not too expensive. I like the red ones for single eggs and on Cleos I use the trebles cause the factory ones suck.

Oakie Doakie, What split ring pliers do you use? My old ones suck. Gonna dig out my mechanic ones if I can find em.
Haven't had any problems with hooks from eagle claw on up. The stock hooks on the long-a bombers are another story. How do you pronounce Gamakatsu? Is it like Okuma or Rapala?

Purdy sure he turned 17 today. He's been out every day. He took a video of a 8 point at 14 yrds. from his stand yesterday. He got some more traps in the mail.
You gonna show him that Beaver spot purdy soon? Waterfowl comes back in down this way purdy soon too.

The other day  Joey was huntin bushytails & herd a bunch of noise, here he said it was the biggest buck he ever saw. It busted down his dads deer pen & all the deer except a young en  ended up gettin loose.  If they haven't returned by Sat. I'll prob. give him a hand tryin to catch em.

I believe some hooks are not tempered properly and therefore break well before they should! I have had problems with boxes of  hooks 3 times over  my lifetime.    And when I say a bad box I mean a bad box. Last time was about 8 years ago and I was fishing the wall with my mother and she hooked first steely of year while I was getting another rod ready for her. Water was off .. I had 6lb triline and I thought the line snapped on her after about 1 1/2 minutes of fight. She pulled in the rest of line and the treble had 2 broken barbs!  I took another from the new box and  attached hemostats and found a log and tested and same results next 3 hooks.  Sent them back to Mustad and they sent a letter and I got 5 boxes from them.
I also got a new Brand of hook off Ebay from australia... Reli x hooks.   Only drawback is smallest size in a size 10 in bait holder of beak. They work great in the Yough And I caught a few steelies on them 1 time I went up this year.
