Mohawk Walleyes

Just returned from a morning outing for Walleyes on the Mohawk.  Arrived @ 6:30 and caught one on the first cast.  For the next hour to hour & a half it was nonstop action.  Was hooking fish on crankbaits on about every other cast & at one point caught one on 3 consecutive casts.  None bragging size but was the most action packed Walleye fishing I've ever experienced (not a big walleye fisherman). Once the sun was up they turned off & that was it.  May go again tomorrow but an hour earlier.

I'll be out there tomorrow morning as well. Where abouts are you going?

I hooked into something very large about 200 yards below lock 8 last week. I'm pretty sure it was a northern or tiger, but I never got a glimpse of her. We had about a 3 minute battle. I was using fairly light gear, and she kept heading for some submerged bushes or straight down. I also had to battle the current quite a bit. The dam was wide open. The water was extremely murky that day. If it was an 'eye, it was going straight on the wall.

I was at lock 12, on the side opposite the lock.  I don't like fishing the lock side as I don't have anything to get the fish up the wall with.  I went back this morning and it looked like the water had dropped about 4 - 6 inches but they didn't turn on like they did yesterday.  I arrived at 5 am this morning but didn't catch a fish until around 7.  Caught 2 in about 15 minutes, then another one about 8:30 about 15 minutes before I left.  Lost too many crankbaits this morning--it gets expensive.  Yesterday I only lost one.  I'll be bowhunting the rest of the weekend.

Hook-- are you fishing from shore or from a boat?  Which lock is #8?

I fished from boat below lock 8. I really don't know the names of roads, or areas, since I'm still pretty new to the area. I launch from Mohawk Marina in Alplaus and go upstream, if that helps any.

I wound up not going today. Our daughter is fighting a cold, and my wife needed a break. I just finished winterizing my boat. The ice can't come quick enough now.

Lock 8 is the lock that you can see from from 890. to get to the lock side you take the exit for the rotterdam mall but instead of turning right , take a left and drive past the L&M motel. To get to the fast side take rt 5 into Scotia past the corperations park and take a rt into Malliwick park.  I landed a 27" eye there and a 40'' pike as well.
