Thinking SPRING
I heard several birds gobble yesterday 11-10-10. Do turkey's rut like deer? Do they chase, push, dog, and lockdown, like whitetails.Iron if your out there any help on the matter,I've never kill a turkey,46 years and never got one( the bird I've been hunting is so old he turned grey, his beard went down hill and is only 4 inches from 10, only got them at the Giant Eagle.

No, they do not "rut" in the Fall. Gobbling in the Fall is common, they do so to assemble, possibly establishing dominance, just because they want to. Young of the year and older birds alike will gobble. I wouldn't be thinking Spring. I'd be in feeding areas hoping to get a whack at a longbeard or in the hopes of breaking a flock up.

^ Got it Agree also it may be mostly young jakes gobbling, but I have also has several times where I witnessed adult gobblers cutting loose on the limb at fly down time in the Fall.

I hear ya Tuna. I heard/watched em gobblin' almost every day this past archery season. Jakes and gobblers. This rutting turkey ended up getting himself killed this past Saturday all because he had to pick a fight with another young gobbler... Doug and I were walking out Saturday morning when we stumbled upon 2 gobblers fighting. We stalked to within 30 yards of them. I drew first, shot and watched the arrow go low. They never stopped fighting. Doug drew, shot and clipped a limb. Yep, they're still fighting. I nocked another and drew. No shot. Too many limbs. Dougy charges to within 15 yards of them and drills one of them with the Rage 2-blade. The other flies off. He was a young double-bearded bird. Ironhed

That's quite an accomplishment stalking turkeys in the fall while wearing a fluorescent orange hat and vest. Congratulations. Nice bird with a bow! Funny story, yes not all turkeys are smart,no more need for a pecking order, the surviver is the boss.
