Anyone hunt Allegheney Forest?

Gentlemen,
This weekend a buddy and i are traveling from Erie To Allegheney National Forest. We dont really have a spot or a plan, just know that it's bigger woods than we have here. We will be hunting for all types of small game. I'm not asking for any secret spots, maybe a little advice on where i might find a good area of nut trees, or pheasant fields, or older woods? I would also appreciate any info on where NOT to go. Thanx in advance for any tips.

..And then I saw a sheet being let down from Heaven and it contained all the four legged creatures of the Earth. And then the Lord told me "Get up Peter, Kill and Eat."

I was just down there the weekend of the 20'th.  If you want grouse look for clear cuts that are 5-10 years old in the ANF.  You cant miss them there isn't a tree in them that will be bigger then your wrist or taller then 10-15 feet.  The spot that I found while we were down there produced 8 flushes in an hour and a half hunt.  Aside from that, just the normal...  You want tree rats look for the oaks.  I found a spot that I got 3 in an hour and could have had my limit but it was around a cut and I wanted to save it for grouse hunting.  If you're looking for pheasants hit the game lands.  We hit up Blue Eye opening day and only saw one, the stocking is spotty at best with few birds down there.  If you want a better idea of where the cuts are try the link, they don't have roads on the map, but it will get you in a general area.  As for rabbits I can't tell you where to go.  I've hunted Warren Co. for the better part of 14 years now and then and have yet to even see a rabbit other then squashed on the roads.  Good luck, and let us know how you end up.

The area between rt 59 and rt 321 east of Kinzua Dam near Klondike was logged about 10 years ago
and has turkey squirles and grouse. Rt 59 is the top of the hill 321 is the valley.
Or off 321 look for Bucklick Trail, also logged a few years back
If the hunting sucks fish in Sugar Run Creek along 321 for Rainbow downstream from Bucklick trail
Very few rabbits or pheasant in the area in years past
Ranger station or dams scenic overlook has free area maps

I have property adjoining the ANF and have hunted it for 45 years. the new nic-name is OILagheny NF, there are more wells in these 500,000 acres than all of the other national forests so don't be suprised to see roads and wells everywhere.
It's good year for Black Cherry mast, find that and you will find game, the old clear cuts are good for grouse.
Go past Sheffield on Rt. 948 turn left onto the Cherry Run road between Barnes & Brookston, lot's of good roads taking you into some nice country.
I am headed there in the AM for a week and hope to slip into some steelheads on the eastside streams.
    Good luck!

A friend of mine claimed to be familiar with the area outside of tittoute.so i tried there.  we saw plenty of deer, 1 bear, and no small game. I'm still pretty dissapointed, but not discouraged. Thanx

I try to remind myself that days of not seeing any game in a new area is important too. Kill the curiosity, if you will. The curiosity of whats on that hill, or whats in that hole will keep me up at night. Needless to say, I slept well this night.
