Pulling steelies thruogh the ice in the bay

What kind of bait is usually used to get Steelies in the bay ice fishing. I have all the set ups needed as I usually go for pike in the inland waters

Any bait you have down the hole may get hit by a steelie, but if you are targeting them, try using swedish pimples or kastmasters.  Anywhere between just off the bottom to just under the ice.

You'll need a little heavier line than on your panfish rods to hold up when they run and the line scrapes on the ice at the edge of the hole.

Do you catch many thru the ice?The way they fight in open water it should be a blast thru the ice.

I'm gonna fish more and work less.

This is a steeley I caught at the fisherie ice out last winter. 2# test 24" UL rod. The fish measured 20" on the money. Caught him on a tiny chartreuse genz bugz jig with a meal worm. The fight was awesome! Earlier that morning a much larger steelhead broke off at the hole but the smaller 20" fish was still cool and a bright as a new silver dollar!

If you are thinking of steel head under ice stop at east Ave its a short walk from the car its always plowed out if the snow is deep and there will be plenty of anglers out to give you a few pointers, Just watching you'll pick up on it soon enough. Lampi marina is also a steel head hot spot when the ice comes on Its much like the pig pen was at trout run.

Do you just use ice jigs and minnows or waxies on rods? and what should be used on tip-ups? Where are some good spots I have seen ppl at Walnut marina and we see a few on teh aqua vu out on presq.

Pimples or other smaller spoons tipped with a shiner straight down, long slow jigging right off the bottom. I catch most during the first ice(earlier in the season.)  Anywere 6-10 ft with sand is always a great spot.

Yes, get the right day and you could hammer them off the wall at walnut mouth and the marina, make sure the ice is safe first.
