Neshannock Creek 10/6/07

Headed down to the creek around noon and fished until about four. I did very well considering the conditions, then again these are freshly stocked trout.

Anyway, it was sight fishing at it's finest with 5x tippet, no indicator and no weight. My most productive fly was a size 14 glo bug in pink. It produced a strike just about every three drifts but the hookups were another story. Caught somewhere around ten fish, five or six breakoffs and countless misses. The mid-day heat didn't seem to matter so as long as you kept your fly line off the water and your tippet light.

These fish have already taken on some dark color and are very sluggish and beat up. We need rain quickly!

Was wondering if Neshannock was float stocked or were the fish just dumped behind the fly shop?
    Thanks for any replies.

changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes....nothing remains quite the same

They were dumped behind the shop. There isn't nearly enough water to float stock.

I did find quite a bit of fish 100-200 yards past the bridge in about three inches of water, though.

I headed down to the creek for a few hours after the Steelers game today...

The fish were a little more tight lipped and spooky but after several changes in flies I managed a few.

It looks like one more day of unseasonably warm weather and finally some relief in temperature and precipitation. Hopefully the rain will be plentiful.

Ronny I had a blast up at camp( Mckeen county) on a streamer that TT gave me . They liked it stripped fast and just hammered it . Its white marabow with some blue foam. Tried alot of flies and only one hook up on a bead head caddis , that I lost, Same deal , a fly fishing only creak.

Nice. You'll have to show me this fly next time we fish. I love fishing streamers.

I did walk a little downstream almost at the Lazy Hole and did find quite a few fish in groups here and there, they were really, really spooky though and I had to use almost stealth military tactics to approach them. Once they saw a shadow they scattered so I was practically laying down in the weeds, side arming a roll cast on a few occasions.

Still a lot more fun than fishing bathtub sized holes beside all of Allegheny, Butler, Lawrence, Crawford, Mercer and Erie county at Walnut Creek.

Fished for stockies as well on Sunday.  Found some perfect flow for a change, and the fish were very cooperative taking buggers and streamers.

Headed up to NC on Sunday. Has anyone been up there this week? Did the little bit of rain have any affect on the level and/or color?

Transam, take 79 north to the Grove City exit. rt 208, take 208 west, it will run right into the town of Volant, when you cross the bridge the Orvis Fly shop is on the right, there are some shorter ways but 208 is the easiest .  Good luck, John

thats a good fish, they are all good, some are gooder than others

No, from the mill dam to the covered bridge is under DHALO regulations.

There are pike in the creek, though I've never caught one.

There are plenty of trout in the creek, especially after last weeks stocking. Yes, the creek is very low and clear but the water temperature dropped into the mid-50's as of yesterday and the fish are starting to become active for the better part of the day.

Transam, you can fish with spinning gear there, it is special regulation trout stream, no live bait, it is not a just fly fishing only stream, rooster tails, hus-lures work pretty well there and down the stream to the first big bend is a big hole, go for it.  Good luck, John

If you want a cheap outfit to get started with WalMart carries a SA combo pack that isn't bad. You can also check out the Reddington Crosswater combo. It can be had for around $100 (Rod, reel, line and leader) at some of the local fly shops, I know Hoey's carries it. Both are very usable and will get you started and last you for a while.

I have done pretty decent with sucker spawn and spinners here.  A very nice creek and loaded with fish.  Nice smallmouth too with gizits.  Had a pike or muskie one time on a jointed rapala- perch color

I was talking with Bob from the fly shop the other day about the pike in the creek and supposedly there are some monster fish, some in the 40 inch class. Those who want to target them, try the last big hole before the covered bridge. It's the hole at the bend in the creek where you park in the cornfield and walk down a steep bank to reach it. With the water conditions now, you'll be able to see the fish close to the bottom.

Anyway I caught a couple in a few hours fishing the popular stretch this evening. The fish behind the shop are getting pretty educated and obviously pressured so don't be afraid to walk around a little bit. There's a good number of fish throughout the entire upper DHALO half even with the low conditions and some of these fish haven't seen a fly all day, thus they'll be more willing to strike.

I got one of the Cabelas setups a few years back when I started fly fishing for steelies.  Since I make one or two trips to Erie these days (gas and crowds) it's perfect for me.  I've also put 2 guys onto this setup for trout fishing and they've both been pleased.  Nice setup for the money IMHO.
