Bearded Hens.

This picture I took this morning from the kitchen window shows our resident bearded hen. All of the other bearded hens I have seen have had much shorter stubbles. What is your experience with bearded hens?

The picture is not sharp as I took it through double-paned glass and a window screen.

there was 1 where i hunt. started seeing her when her beard was just tiny. saw her every year for about 5 years and decided if i she her again i was gonna take her. each year her beard got alittle longer. last seen it was prob. 6 or 7 inches but real skinny. nothing like a gobbler. never did see her again to get a shot.

It is my understanding that about 5-10% of the hens have some sort of beard but that seems high to me.

I've got 19 birds in my yard as I type. One long beard and two bearded hens, one about 4" and one about 6". I have seen one or two every winter for about 25 years with about 7" being the longest. All have been pencil thin. I would think that even 5% of the hens being bearded is a bit high although close to accurate.
