I can't understand PA duck season!?
I am hoping to get some info on duck / goose seasons? I was on the PA website and am having trouble understanding when and where i can hunt ducks and geese. Even more trouble identifing birds and bag limits (this part is less of a concern, as a newbie duck hunter, I'll be lucky to kill more than 1 of anything). I called the Game commission, and the officer just kept referring me back to the website.
I am hoping to hunt this saturday 10-6 for ducks. Is it open? heard it was, read it wasnt or was or wasnt! I dont understand the zoning either. Sorry. The areas I want to know about are Pa gameland 109, 314, and the national wildlife refuge. Hope i havent confused you too bad. Any info would be appreciated.

No, season opens in that zone, and others on 10/13. Here is your link. SGL 109 is NW zone, 314 is NW and I suppose if you are on the shoreline it is Erie zone. http://www.pgc.state.pa.us/pgc/cwp/view.asp?a=458&q=153814

After you click on the link, click on the brochure. A pdf file will come up, you can print it off and study it. Also these same documents are available at the post office. Any other questions just post them up....

These areas hold "wood ducks" you are limited to two birds. If you happen into a good spot you can go over your limit of two easily. I am not confused, I do think you would be better off if you could find someone to tag along with a few times. Hopefully someone other than the people telling you duck opens this Saturday....

Other than the "early resident goose" hunting, I believe the limits, dates, and zones are regulated by federal laws. That is why it's so screwed up.
About 20 years ago I misread the regulations and had a wonderful morning shooting at ducks and actually killing six at a local creek. Could not believe I had the entire area to myself, until my father-in-law informed me a day later that the season had not yet opened. I was lucky - those birds could have cost me a lot of money and grief.

Was out fishing this past evening and seen maybe 150 mallards fly over me. It seems to me theres many ducks out there for the taking. The rules are screwy. stamp here stamp there???

A state stamp and a federal stamp. All the seasons are set by the states but they have to fit into a "federal framework". The feds set max days and bag limits, earliest start dates and end dates. The states look at what is allowed, then submit their seasons for approval....
