Hey all. I'm new to the site, but not the bay. I've been fishing there for twenty years or so. I've always loved smelt and smelt fishing (nature's premade fish sticks). I usually catch the most out toward the middle, but they seem to like the surface. In fact I seem to catch the most right near the hole. The biggest trick I've found is use your shiniest little jig with a piece of yarn or some such fuzzy thing. Smelt have nasty little teeth(even on their tounge) They hit that yarn and get stuck like velcro. When they're thick you can catch a several dozen in no time at all.
Here's a little cleaning tip as well. If you have a decent number to clean, get an air compressor with a sports ball filling needle. Just remove the head, insert needle into anus and hit the air. Just be mindful of where your aiming. Bread, deep fry, and enjoy.
