Hole Size

Is there a limit on the size hole you can use here in NY for ice fishing? I'm ashamed to say that I've ice fished for over thirty years and never thought about it. Common sense has always dictated a hole no larger than necessary for the biggest fish that I am likely to catch, say eight inches or so for pike and down from there, depending on where I'm fishing. I don't see anything about it in the regs, unless I just missed it.

i usually go 6 inch because if you accidentally step on it your not going to hurt your ankle.  of course with my feet i could step on a 10 inch hole lol.  only had 2 fish i couldnt get through my 6 inch.  a carp in the erie canal and a largemouth in my friends pond that i had to let go this morning.  could get the head in the hole but couldnt squeeze the belly through.

if at first you dont succeed... blow it up.

you want organic? well then shut the &^$() up and eat a *$&#*( squirrel.

We're talking wide or circumference?? As long as it is big enough to jig my chub.

I set myself up for that one didn't I? Like I said, I'd never noticed anything about it in the reg book and never thought about about it until I saw a post saying the limit is ten inches in PA. Thanks.

It did get a little away from the question on you...lol. I don't think there is a limit. I don't see anything in the regs either. Your best bet is to contact the DEC or an ECO. You can get an ECO through the dispatch at 1-877-457-5680. If you get an answer please post it so we all know.

Thanks Wisdom, I actually emailed the DEC this morning. When I hear something back I'll let you know. I did like the answers I got. I was laughing so hard at one point I could barely see the screen.

jenna i agree, i use the 6 hand and think 6 is plenty for most species.. the 10" gas auger works great on ft thick and setting tipups! I go gas 10" whenever possible ,even if i'm just out for jigging.
