Cabin fever Trolling reels

What does everyone do to their reels in the winter to get them ready for the season. I bought all new reels last year and didn't spring for Tekotas or anything but still shelled out a decent amount of coin for 47LCAs and Convector 45s. The braid is only a year old I plan on leaving it alone, will respool the rigger and board lines with new mono, and will put new leader material on the core and coppers.

What does everyone do with the reels as far as oiling, cleaning etc. Anything? Just wanted to ask guys who have been using these reels for a long time and see how they have held up with or without maintenance. My old reels where Cabelas counters that I had for about 8 years and did nada to them and only ever had an issue with one of the counters not operating properly.

Jeremy...I don't typically re-oil or grease my muskie or walleye trolling reels for about two or three seasons or if I detect an issue of some sort.  I do spray them down with some light WD-40 and wipe off to clean and protect each year.  One thing I always do by habit is to store all of my reels with the drags backed way off.  As far as respooling lines, I'll typically let my mono go two seasons and the braid when it starts giving me any problems such as frays and easy breaks.  I actually have some Mason Tiger Braid on one of my muskie reels thats 5 years old and the stuff still feels and performs like new...its amazing stuff.  I have also taken some of my braids and swtched them out after the season by respooling to another reel so that the line that was in the spool is now on the outer end.  Saves on cost and helps you get your moneys worth.  The braid, as you know, can be expensive...

Ya braid is staying for a few years and the drags are backed off. Going to replace the mono on the rigger rods as I don't want Mr. King salmon busting me off because I was too lazy to respool some cheap mono, at least it will ease my mind a little until Tim knocks em off at the back of the boat with the net.

I usually just strip a bit off of the braided and retie new ball bearing swivels on. I bought some ball bearing swivels at Cabelas and they are CRAP, I had two break last year, luckily they were both just as the fish was netted and I didn't lose any rigs. Going with Sampo swivels this year.

Glad you mentioned backing the drags off, with all that was going on here at the time that's one of the things I forgot. As for the rigger rods, I'll probably just strip a little of the mono off and use them for another year. I use them very little and they spend all their time out of the sunlight in the cuddy so they should be OK. I've been very happy with my Cabelas reels (mostly Depthmaster Golds) and have 4 Daiwas that have been bullet proof so far.

Got real lucky the other day and found Ugly Stick combos on the clearance rack at WallyWorld for $19, I bought all they had, now I just have to re-spool them with braid or fireline. They are perfect for perchin'.

We used to switch mono from one reel to the other, especially on rigger rods, since most of the bottom of the spool never saw the light of day.  Braid should last you 5+ years.  Even when it is "faded" it should still be just as strong as the day you put it on (unless you frayed it up badly somehow - like a bad eye on a rod).

I'm with you guys on the cabin fever!  Come on spring!!!

Pretty good conversation on reels and reel maintenance for Erie fishing..  I'd have to say the recreational user for great lakes fishing would probably never have to get serious about any internal work given the length of season, and the actual work these reels do vs. the work they're really capable of.  To be blunt, walleye, and the occasional steelhead really don't put that much of a hurting on our equipment.   Keeping the drags backed off if probably the most important thing we can do to prolong reliable use.  The drag is practically the only real wear point you'll have to deal with in these reels anyway.

Here's a guy doing a rebuild on Tekota 500 LC.  It shows what you can get in to-- if you want to.

I too swap my line from reel to reel so that last years "used" line is at the backing.  It would probably last much longer than the 4 years I use it, but my lack of self control makes me buy new line before the stuff wears out!

On line choice, I tried some Power Pro last year and probably won't buy it again.  It seems to shed and seperate more than the Fireline I've used in the past.  I haven't lost a fish or any gear because of it yet, but I like the Fireline better.  (it's all good!)
