Think about where he fishes before you buy one.  Clear water like Erie bay they are fun!  I have the aqua view scout and have used it for 5 years with no problems.  If he doesn't have flasher, they are better tool overall.

I bought the Aqua-Vu scout a few years ago--it lasted one season and decided to not work again........I contacted the company and they said I could have a new monitor for 75 bucks.....at the time an entire new set-up would have cost about 150 bucks........I decided to just let it die---

I have read there have been many upgrades to all types and models of underwater cameras.........it was neat though.....I loved showing guys fish on the screen......everybody would be bummed out.....stating no fish......I'd drop the camera down.......and wa-la.......instant attitude change !!!!  even if they saw a 4 inch perch --  which looked like a monster  --  they were gung ho again and started fishing with enthusiasm!!!    Kids really loved it.......I loved it........

I might look into getting another one down the road..........I owned mine probably back in 2004 or so

cabelas has one on sale for 99 bucks and 139 bucks.........not sure how good they are, but it is cheap !!!

I too have an aqua view scout-
    love it
never had a problem with it
used it for four seasons now
I even used it once in the summer time on the boat - the boat has to anchored or its tough to see- plus with the sunlight - it made the screen hard to see
needless to say I love it- thanks honey!
