    Hey Dan!

Yeah, this board falls pretty silent until mid March or so when everyone gets a little crazy for trout again.

Although, with this crew I would expect a few random photos of Steelhead being tossed up now and then.

As for ice reports?  This is what I gleaned on my drive into work today:

Small ponds in Rensellaer County:  Frozen
Burden Lake:  Skim Ice that could be good by the weekend- if not, next weekend for sure
Hudson River in Albany:  Skim Ice
Snyders Lake:   WIDE FRIGGIN' OPEN WITH NO SIGNS OF WINTER!

Seriously, that lake is messed up.  Even the edges don't look CLOSE to freezing.  So weird.

That is weird  ... the Hudson has skim ice and your lake has none ????

My thoughts exactly, Brian!   Heck- the **** Hudson is tidal and actually contains some real salinity in the winter and dry periods, and obviously has some pretty measurable current.  And yet there is ice on much of it!

Snyders?  Not one single ice cube in the drink!

Is Snyder Lake a spring lake?
If so it will take a little longer to freeze.

Well, there are surely some springs in there...  And that seems to be most people's theory on why that sucker takes so long to ice over (some winters it never gets safe).  But the lake is also 40ft deep, and it sure seems to me that any real 'influence' from springs would dissapate before hitting the surface that freezes.

But for now, that is the only theory that makes much sense.  All the other local lakes are springfed too, and they are growing ice.  Funniest part?  Snyders is by FAR at the highest elevation of any of them!  Crazy, right?

It's just really odd to me.  Even the old timers haven't given me an explanation that I believe yet!

I am beginning to wonder if Bailey Mountain is really a volcano, and my house is sitting atop some sort of "Little Yellowstone" that could blow sky high at any moment!  At least the geothermal would explain the open water!

How about in spring? Is this lake the last to lose
its ice? Could be the depth.

Well, oddly, it seems to be the first to lose ice too!  It's great to hear your input Mikastorm, since I feel like I should know the reasons for it but I am still at a loss.  Of course, it really is no big deal, but it is a mystery that has been driving me crazy for the past three winters.  DEPTH must surely play a part too.

My theory leans more towards wind impacts since it is up pretty high over the Hudson Valley to the west and the Berkshires/Rensellaer Plateau to the east.  There were literally FOUR FOOT waves last week during those huge winds.  It was crazy to see rollers on a 110 acre peice of water.

And judging by the total devestation of my dock supports last spring (I left the supports in out of laziness), it sure seems that as soon as one part of the lake opens up in springtime and the wind blows, the whole lake is pretty much clear of ice within a few days.  Trouble is, when the wind pushes the big ice chunks towards my shoreline (seems to always be the case with prevailing winds) they sure kick the crap out of anything in their way!

    Man you got me.lol
Sounds like a nice place though.
don,t know about those 4fts. wow.
The lake near me,nwpa., is 3,560 acres and it is fairly much froze over.
Shenango Lake is a flood control so it has current to keep it open.
    Your lake is a mystery.

Thanks Brother...  The mystery remains...  It just bugs me that something is so different about this particular lake (there are ten more lakes within 15mi of similar sizes) and I don't know what it is!

Interestingly enough, the ice fishing STINKS there.  But the summer fishing can be sweet sometimes!

Wouldn,t mind making a trip that way sometime.
I lived in Rome for 2 years in the early 70,s and ice fished Mohawk Lake and Oneida.
Hit Champlain a few times too.

Schedule a long weekend in the middle of February, and me and some of these guys would fish with ya' anytime.

My ice fishing party (should) be on February 20th this year.  The first Saturday after Valentine's Day.

As mentioned, the fishing sucks, but the comaraderie is tough to beat!

    Jimmy:

I have heard that sometimes a lake has too much alcohol runoff from parties hosted on the shoreline and it keeps a lake from freezing over.  Although I have not heard of any such parties on Snyders in many years.  Just a random theory!

You know Ed, there might just be something to that theory of yours.

And the tainted runoff may also be responsible for the jungle-like growth of Bavarian Hops that sprung up in the front yard in early September.

    Some seriously resilient turf though!
