Jig Heads

Where do you guys buy your jig head/hooks from. Looking for multiple colors and strong enough for steelies. Also what box would you guys choose to dedicate for jigs. Trying to get alot of offerings together for my pin. Have flies already and the materials to tie sacks. Need jigs, beads, worms.

Flo. orange head black tail...always some flash...is my favorite color. I prefer a 1/32 oz. jig.

If you don't want to spend alot of money on fancy pre-colored jigs buy the plain gray ones, various sizes. Or dig up some old ones from your tackle box you haven't used in a while, but sharpen the hooks.    There's a product called Pro-Tec Powder Paint.  Comes in a jar about the size of a salmon egg jar.  It comes in dozens of colors.  I mainly use red, purple and hot pink.   You just hold a jig with a pair of forceps, heat it up about 4 seconds using one of those long-stem lighters you'd use to light a gas grill, then immediately dip it into the powder.  Works great.   I've found that if you take several of them and place them in an oven at 350 deg afterwards for 10-20 minutes it will cure the paint and make the head a little shinier.  Otherwise you'll get a dull-satin finish.  But that works too.   This paint isn't cheap, $6-$8 a color.  But one jar will last you forever.   I get it at Tackle Unlimited on Rt 51 near Elizabeth.  When you hold the jig with the forceps, be sure to grab the jig by the eye to keep it from clogging up with paint.

i use an eyebuster to clear out the eyes before putting them in the oven, i heat them with a blow torch and hold them by the hook. i dont normally have a problem with paint in the eye of the hook but it happens.

just let it go man, it's not the end of the world that your post was whacked, take a deep breath for me.

you plugged a competing business on fishusa's board, period.

EDIT:  HC, i have started to frequently fish jigs on my pin.  pm if you want info on where to buy, etc.

Most of the baitshops in Erie carry just what you're looking for in terms of collarless jigheads in various sizes and colors....I usually stock up while I'm up there in the summer for tying in the fall and winter.

If FishUSA doesn't carry a quality jighead that someone is looking for, then I don't see how it could hurt mentioning another place...?...Oh well...

Make your own using 1x or 2x long, 2x strong down eye fly hooks, stick pins and solid nickel plated brass beads. Google first cast jigs for detailed info on making jig heads using the stick pin/bead method.

Seems a bit rediculous when Fishusa doesnt sell something that another store does, you can't post them.  Maybe they should take the hint and pick it up. Jig heads are something you would think they carry. Just because I buy jig heads somewhere else doesn't mean I buy the other materials to buy them somewhere else.  This is a site to help other anglers. Ill just go jigless I guess, which leads to needing live bait which FishUSA doesnt sell either. Sounds like a semi-win or loss decision. There are many other threads that have competitor links.  Many that are alot more expensive than jig heads. Just stating the facts.

    pickle loaf.

Like said above, dip your ideas into the fly tying relm.  Quality hook with bead chain link "eyes" tied on (ceiling fan pull chain).  For a simple jig, tie on the chain "eyes", then some mariboo or craft fur behind, or better yet, follow the clouser instructions (on the tutorial board) with these "breathing" materials.  They make great crappie jigs, which usually make good steel head jigs.  The chain eyes make a great addition to a wooly bugger too.
