I use a Remington 700 .270 BDL with a Nikon Monarch scope most of the time...Have dumped them out to 450 yds with this setup....Also use a Remington 700 SS BDL in the .25-06 caliber and I love that as well....

450 yds. with a 270? I think I would have to see that one. Even if done, I am not sure that would be the most responsible shot to take with that particular caliber on a deer. Just my two cents.

Sorry, back on topic. My choice is a Howa .270 with a Leupold scope, using 130 grain Speer Nitrex loads. I haven't deer hunted with it in 15 years (been done in archery), but I still shoot it and it is like most 270s... a tack driver.

450 is very do-able with the .270.

I love cats. I just can't eat a whole one..

At approximately 30 inches of drop with a 130 grain bullet at that range, you may be able to hit (once in a great while), but it does not change the fact that this is an irresponsible shot. It isn't even a debate.

Agree, .270 a very flat shooting caliber and the best whitetail cartridge ever created IMO. I killed deer around 325 no problem with mine in open field. I do have my brother on video shooting a doe at a little over 400 with his .270, dropped like a ton of bricks.

I used to hunt with the Rem. pump 308 until I aquired the 300 WBY Mag. But this year my buddy swore he sees deer all day long in the slashings. I decided to go on the other side of the ravine from him and took a .45 cal Lever gun. I've never seen a deer roll after being shot like that before. What a sight!

i agree, .270 can handle that distance, it may be irresponsible for You to shoot at a deer..if you know your gun its very capable of mass destruction...

i love my .243 took plenty with it to know thats all the deer gun i'll ever need. shot a few close to 200 yards with it..around here where i hunt not alot of places to touch out to 300 yards with it so i havent tried, but i know darn well the gun is capable to that distance.

BUT MY FAVORITE rifle happens to be me bowtech...............

LOL.......Sprinting across an open feild none the less.....DUMPED IT....Aimed head high 2 1/2 car lengths and it was a done deel.......I shot one at 363 last year (Ranged this one)...This one was standing still......I have my father-in-law reloads, and they are a little on the "hot" side...But I know it can be done because I have done it....With witnesses too as well.........

I hunt with a .270 Remington 760.  I hate bolt action rifles, I am left handed, and it feels good. It also belonged to my grandfather, and that makes me like it more.  Never had a problem with it, killed a pile of deer.

And yeah .270 at 450 isn't that bad at all.

I have shot a lot at long distance. The biggest problem is wind drift. Tables available now show bullet drop but one has to shoot to see the wind drift. Sometimes it is a considerable distance. No wind , out to 500 yards, good rest, experianced shooter, dead meat. Other than that , it is a questionable shot for most of us. WF

RE: deer rifles 2009/12/17 09:37:38 (permalink)
I killed one at a measured 427 back in college with a 270.  However, it was a very specialized situation.  It was on an open powerline, so there were zero obstructions.  The 270 I was shooting was my varmit gun, a Voere (Voere was the man behind the WW II German sniper rifles and later he built for Kliengunther) with an 8X Target scope.  I had shot 100's of groundhogs with this rifle over the years I owned it and knew what it would do at distance.   I was shooting a varmit bullet, 90 grain Sierra hollow point, backed by a very stiff load of IMR 4350 and a CCI Benchrest primer, so the trajectory was fairly flat.  The shot was taken from a prone position with the rifle on a solid rest made up of a hot seat and a rolled up jacket.

Even though there appeared to be no wind, the bullet drifted about 10 inches, but still ended up in the chest cavity.  The deer walked across the power line as if untouched, but piled up as soon as it reached the other side.

Shooting long range is not easily done under field conditions. I have passed up many shots at long range and will in the future. I hate to wound deer and have spent up to 2 days tracking wounded deer. That one was a brisket hit with a flintlock. Shooting a deer at 450 yds can easily be done by someone that knows his rifle and the distance. Making a 50yd mistake at that distance can lead to a miss or worse a wounded deer. I have trouble telling 350 from 450 under some circumstances,so I just pass. My 2cents.

.300 weatherby magnum 180 grain bullet . No more trailing deer and either take a heart or neck shot not to ruin any meat by hitting a shoulder . 6x18 variable 50mm objective TASCO Banner scope . Accurate to 450 YARDS in case I ever get a bear shot across a mountain . Flatness of bullet path is amazing but at $2.50 a shot I definately aim small miss small.

Browning white gold medalion 30-06 topped with a leupold vx-III, shoot federal premium green ballistic tips. longest shot ive ever taken was roughly 120 yards, i hunt thick woods and its hard to see much farther than 50. IMO the 30-06 is the best deer caliber for many reasons, but the #1 reason is ive never had a deer take more than a couple steps after the shot. I hunt with alot of guys that use .270's .308 7mm-08 and alot of other popular calibers and they just dont seem to do as much damage as the 30-06. My one buddy uses a 300 wsm with winchester silver tips and that thing puts a hurtn on em! but i saw him blow a does heart up this year, she dropped like a ton of bricks and a minute later she got up and ran 30 yards and was about to run over a high wall that was about 300 yards down and i put one in her head with the 06 so we didnt have to drag her back up! but if i was to purchase another caliber it would be a 300wsm

For the big stuff, long range hunts, or really nasty weather hunts: Remington Model 700 Alaskan Wilderness Rifle, .300 Rem. Ultra Mag. Home made ammo with RL25 powder and various grains of Nosler Partitions and Accubonds. Leupold Mark 4 Tactical 6.5-20X50mm scope. I guess that wouldn't be my deer rifle!

For lighter game, deer antelope etc. (even though most still consider it big): Rem Model 700L (laminated) 7mm Rem. Mag with factory Federal ammo, Nosler Partitions. Leupold VX-1 4-12X40 mm scope.

When I have to (Allegheny County): Remington 11-87 12 Guage with Hastings rifled barrel and Leupold Ultimate Slam 2-7X33mm shotgun/muzzleloader scope. Lightfield 2 3/4" Hybred EXP sabot slugs seem to fly the best.

One thing I know ..... Remington! Unless you're making a custom. Even then the Rem mod. 700 action is a good place to start.

Now I'm in the mood to hunt!
