Erie area hunting

I am purchasing a camp in the Erie area and had a few questions pertaining to the hunting.   Are there a good deal of nice bucks taken in the area ?  Lots of corn and grapes.  Would think that this would hold nice bucks.  I am mainly into archery and don't care to rifle hunt too much.  Is it tough to gain access to farms ?  Was up yesterday fishing and only saw one orange dot while driving to different spots.  How bout the small game hunting ?

I placed it here to get more responses from the local guys.  Not many people access the hunting forum on the Fish Erie site.  Thanks guys for understanding.

or the off topics, i notice that alot of the guys there talk about hunting..and plenty of good bucks around here but far to many erie crazy hunters..some of these city guys who have never picked up a gun just buy one and shoot at will..your best bet is making friends with locals with land and hunting on their property

greenhead, do you bowhunt? Gaining permission from Erie farmers should be relatively reasonable compared to other parts of the country, provided you show up and act in a responsible manner. That said, don't let anyone tell you there aren't some monsters to be had. Erie has some giants roaming around and there are definitely those in the know that consistantly kill them. While steelheading a couple of remote Erie stream sections, I have seen a few buck tracks that were significantly larger than my fist with big ole splayed tracks. I have a feeling that getting permission to chase them would not have been too difficult. Good Luck.

depending on where your camp is located in erie co.you should have no problem gaining permission to hunt as long as you ASK first.there are some mega bucks in the southern part as well as all along the ohio border in the west.the eastern part of the county has some nice farm country, but your gonna have to hunt hard for the bigguns, but they are there.i was raised in the southern part of erie co.and im kinda partial for there, but the land is mostly permission only.....lottsa deer amid all that corngood luck in your scouting, hope this helps

They are around bout you have to know where to look. I don't know if I would buy a camp in Erie if I was getting it only for hunting. Small game isn't anything special either. They stock some pheasants at Siegal swamp. Now if fishing factors into the camp purchase thats a different story. We all know how great the fishing is in Erie county. So far this rifle season I saw one 4 pointer on SGL and I have only missed 2 days hunting.

I think Erie is a dream county to hunt in PA. There are giant bucks all over erie county and a good amount of deer compared to the rest of the state, anyone who says other wise does not hunt very hard. I would buy a camp if it was a possibility for you. Small game hunting is good, rabbits, tree rats are all over. Pheasants are hard to come by, but the GC does not stock a good number of birds anywhere in the state. Getting permission is kinda tough. You can do it, but you are going to go through a lot of No's before yes's.

Yep, Earl Hodge shot it in Jumbo Woods, 38 scorable points, scores 200 something, I get to look at it everyday when I go to work. Its mounted at the Erie Sprorts store on upper peach.
