The turkey

Fellas I would not beleive this happened if I hadn't been there..

The last Saturday of Turkey season some of the men that come out for deer season came down to scout and hunt for some turkeys..

With them they brought Tom's 12 year old son for his first hunt..
He was all excited...

He and his dad left and headed into the woods...
They weren't gone 10 minutes when 2 quick shots rang out...
Great the boy got some shooting...

About 10 minutes later we see father and son walking up through the yard, dad has a somewhat sheepish look on his face..
The young hunter is all aglow and walking on air as he has just bagged his first turkey...

As they came up on the porch we notice that the bird is a little small and just mabee a little off color for a turkey...
The kid blasted one of our game chickens, he thought the hen chicken was a turkey...
The young man now has a new name around hunting camp it is  Chicken George in honor of his first kill...

As this seemed kinda funny to us all as we have plenty of chickens it really made me mad at his dad for not teaching that young boy what the hell he was shooting at...

Game ID is such a basic skill that you MUST know...He had none...

My 5 year old has the PGC bird and mammal charts on his bedroom wall.
He is quite adept at IDing game and when it comes time to hunt I know he will not be shooting chickens for turkeys.....

Rant over....

Wow, I hope dad teaches safety better than he teaches game identification.

I agree he should have been able to ID the bird....but it's still a dang funny story....something tells me 'chicken george' is gonna stick with him for a while.

When I was shooting in an Junior Rifle League in the mid-70's, I had two sisters on my team.  The local newspaper had huge photos of them one year with the nice bucks that both shot on the opening day.  I took a lot of gruff from them about the "girls" killing bigger bucks than I did.

Wouldn't you know it, the next year one of them shot an elk during deer season.  That was then end of them giving me crap about them killing bigger deer.

By the way, they were farm girls, so they should have known the difference between an elk and a deer.

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.
