MOREAU LAKE

Now is the time until the ice sets for getting rainbows on Moreau Lake.  They are feeding like pirranah (SP) on the surface.  Only problem is walking down to the lake since the gate is closed at the top of the hill.  Also it helps if it is a nice calm day with little wind.  It's a long walk, but the best fishing is in the Northeast corner of the lake near the campground access to the lake.  I use a #16 or #18 mosquito or light Cahill with a 2 lb. leader and have been catching them on a regular basis.  I don't keep them, but it is fun to catch them when they attack those dry flies.

Those "rainbows" with the blue stripe down them are Largemouth Bass.  I can show you the difference this weekend.

I've often wondered about the trout in that park...

I never fished for them, and always sort of thought it might just be put and take in there...  But its nearby and easy to get to, so maybe it would be a fun way to spend an afternoon on a weekend or something!

I have totally given up on Glass Lake near my house.  Its a pickerel factory.

Any chance someone could carry a lightweight canoe down to the lake from the gate, or is that a hernia just waiting to happen?

    Jimmy:

I checked with the attendant on duty and they said no problem with bringing in a light weight canoe as long as you leave by sundown and take it with you.  When I had my canoe on the lake it had to be off by Nov. 1st, but I also found the trout sounding any time I got near them in my canoe.  I've had much better luck fishing from shore and have caught these rainbows right up through Thanksgiving.

    eagleed,
You are casting flies from shore and catching them? I havn't been there in a couple years but the trees are clear enough to do some casting?

Plenty of room for casting, as I wear waders to get me out from shoreline.  Water is shallow around edges so there is no problem from the trees.  Trout can even be caught to left of swimming area where there is a small feeder stream that feeds into the lake after a rain (might be especially good tomorrow after this rain).
I have my best luck (a long walk in) over by the Northeast corner to left of the small bridge that separates the lake from the cove in the back.  I catch them near the camping access area in the far corner of the lake.

Not unusual to get them 18-20" and good fighters.

I just need a good teacher, Perchie.  I'd love to get out there with you sometime and shoot for a rainbow or brown.  It's only like 8 minutes from each of our houses.

I shouldn't say "give up" on that lake, I guess.  I do want to fish it through the ice at least once this winter.  Seems like it can't produce any less fish than my house does during the hardwater.

But still- those pickerel can be EVERYWHERE sometimes.
