Otter's Soft Eggs

There was a question in the General Discussion section in regards to Otter's Soft Eggs. I thought I'd put this tute up to show how to tie them in a way to make them more durable. When tied this way, I never really had an issue with them falling off or falling apart. They do last pretty long and from what I've had experience with - are pretty successful. There are a few things though to remember with this material. Watch if your mixing the colors of the eggs like tying two different colored eggs on the same hook as the colors will bleed together with time. Of course that may not be a bad thing but do not store different colors together. And keep them in plastic bags - not the hard plastic cases as they will "melt" to the plastic in time just like other plastic baits. When fishing them it's important to adjust your weight so that they drift at the same speed as the current. Last year, the water was very clear and I cast a single egg with a beaded center with no weight to a steely that was in the tailout of a pool. Watched him move a foot to inhale it so they do work. Easy and quick to tie also.

1. Otter's Soft Egg Material

2. Using a traditional egg style hook, start the thread and work to the halfway point.

3. Tie in a very sparse amount of veil material. Otter's sells this separatly and it's good stuff. I tried Glo Bug yarn but I think that's too dense.

4. Wrap back toward the hook bend slightly but leave a small "bump" of veil material between a few wraps. This is so the super glue soaks into the veil material and cures to the egg.

5. Coat the hook shank with super glue and impale the egg onto the hook from the eye rearward.

6. Make a few crossing wraps over the egg, front to back, and finish in the front.

7. Pull the veil material front and make a few wraps securing it.

8. Fold the remaining veil material rearward and tie off.

*** Here's the cluster egg tied the same way and also a clear buff egg pulled over a pink bead.

To create the egg sac on a alewin minnow pattern - here's what you can do with this material:

1. Using 2X tippet or larger slide a bead on and impale the egg onto the tippet up to the bead.

2. Using a toothpick to hold the bead in place with one hand, slide the egg over top of the bead.

3. Tie the streamer of your choice - here I used a zonker pattern. Tie in one end of the tippet material.

4. Pull over the egg the other end of the tippet material and tie that in with just a few wraps. Pull it snug securing the egg and finish wrapping.

5. Finish the head. It's important to use a bit of epoxy to secure the egg sac as shown.

A pic of one of my steelhead storage cases. As you can see, I believe in 'em.

Really nice ties, thanks for putting together the tutorial.  I purchased some of these eggs a while back and they haven't left the bags, your post is certainly inspiration to change that!

Question for you:  You mentioned that the eggs should be stored in plastic bags, not hard plastic containers or they will melt.  Does storing them in fly boxes have the same negative impact?

Bruce..I mostly use the tangerine, apricot, and buff colors in 4 & 6 mm. Tia..just watch that your box is not the clear hard plastic type.

You got it Paco - I should have related it to soft plastic baits like you did to better explain it.

Maybe I'm dense or just missed it but what is the material shown in the first picture between the veil material and the eggs and what is it used for?

Dave, Sorry about that but I should have explained that material. It is a fairly new material that Otter's calls the OS3. It's meant to mimic the sucker spawn and it too comes in different colors. Here's a tutorial I posted a while back on how to use it. Once again if you mix colors like I did on this tute, they will tend to bleed together but it does take time for that to happen and it really isn't that bad. Besides it kind of gives it a neat effect when it happens.

I do remember reading that post also at the time. I'll have to look for that sucker spawn material as it looks great. I'm trying the otter eggs now as you show. Thanks for reminding me about the other material.    dave

Steely: I tried to reply to your p.m. but it came up undeliverable as your inbox is full. Yes the instructions helped very much. I wasn't bringing the thread across the egg to help hold them where I wanted them.

I had always threaded them on off center so i had a more open gap on the hook. Without bringing the thread over the egg once or twice they always wanted to roll on me. This way I could thread them on off center and still get it to stay where I wanted it fairly easily.

I haven't checked all the tutorials but if one hasn't been done on the moe eggs can someone do one to help me out? Mine never come out the sise I want or round and where I want them on the hook. Mine are so bad I tried to give the 6 sticks of orange roe I have left to some fellows in exchange for a couple of the eggs when done but they aren't any better at them than I am.

Box is cleaned out Dave and thanks for letting me know. Unless someone jumps in I'll try and put one up for the Moe egg tomorrow. It helps if you have a rotating vise and a good hot glue gun.
