Hudson River Water Levels

Did anyone else who crossed the Hudson everyday notice how HIGH the water was in that river this afternoon?  I tend to take a glance everyday as I drive over the Patroon Island Bridge just to see where the tide is at, etc.

But today around 5pm it was as high as I have EVER seen it!?!   I am talking WAY up, like covering the tree branches on the eastern shoreline!!!

Looking from I-787, I noticed the whole boat ramp at the Hilton Center has disappeared under water!!!  Really weird, and with no full moon to throw a huge tide I just can't figure out what's up.

I drove along the far Upper Hudson around Noroth River/North Creek on Sunday afternoon and everything looked totally normal flow-wise.  We got zero rain up in the ADKs over the weekend, so I doubt the water is coming from that direction.

Does anyone have any idea if they maybe lowered the gates on the Mohawk early or something?

Any idea what would cause such huge water levels in the Albany area without rain or 'spring tides'?

Reel Force!!!  How've you been, man???

I was thinking the Canal System was responsible too, but I always thought the locks closed and gates were raised sometime toward the middle or end of November.  I know I was going through Lock 7 this time of year the past two seasons on a regular basis to pound the smallies near the Vischers Ferry generation plant.

Maybe they have changed the normal navigation season this year due to budgets or something?  I would have to think there are still plenty of big boats on Ontario/Champlain/St Lawerence that haven't made their seasonal pilgrimage down south yet to the Intercoastal.

One of my favorite parts of Striper season is seeing where all those huge me****achts are from when they cruise by on their way to points north for the summer.  Someday I'd love to do the "Grand Loop" from FL to TX to OH to NY and back down.  I knew some guys who lived on boats in FL who have done it.

Sounds like an awesome way to spend a summer if you've got the scratch and the boat to do it!

Anyway, thanks for the input!  Seriously, the river is CRAZY high!!!!

I don't know about the locks of the Champlain Canal, but I drove to lock 7 today to make sure the dock at the launch wasn't pulled out yet. Everything seemed normal. Lock was closed, gates still in summer position, and the water level was normal. I'll be trolling near the weeds above lock 7 tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have some porn to share.

Who knows...  Maybe I should just restrain myself from all the caffiene during the workday or something...

But it sure was wicked high, and I've been looking at it every morning and evening from the same vantage points for over two years now in every season.  I guess the boat ramp reference point at the Hilton Center is what made me realize how crazy it really was.  I suppose tomorrow morning's commute might provide more insight.

Ah ha!    I bet they are lowering the "Federal Pool" or whatever behind the Troy Dam...

Seems like the only way it could have had so much water in Albany, but still have normal autumn flows on the Mohawk and up in the headwaters...  I think the mystery has been solved.

Yep, sounds like it Jimmy. Kevin and I were on the Mohawk today. Didn't do any trolling like planned (I'll be doing that tomorrow and Thursday. Anyone interested? pm me.), but we had a fun day. Oh yeah, we did catch a few fish also.

They don't call him Perch Inc. for nothin'

But we may change his name. He sure does love his pickerel.

    Thats awesome Guys!

Glad to see you making yoru way upriver into my usual haunts, Dougie!!!

I like it best right near where you were- and then all the way to Rexford...

Sometimes some heavy jigheads and black grubs can be SWEET under those little falls that pour out from the rock walls where you were.  I grew up really close to there, and the Niskayuna Bike Path provides some pretty killer fishing access along almost that entire stretch for a 7yr old kid with a bike, fishing rod, and some spare time!

Now that I moved back here and own a boat- it is even better.

Nice fish boys!!!  Those are the smallies I'm talkin' 'bout, Willis!  Nice!

Nice fish, but some scary looking dudes!  I was at Champlain Canal Lock 1 last week and the water was very high...looked like spring thaw without the flotsam.  Must have opened all the locks.

I think you just solved it, Yank...

I bet the east-west canal system rolls along until well into November, but maybe the CHAMPLAIN CANAL is being drawn-down...  That would pretty much explain everything...  Good call...  It looked pretty much normal this morning crossing the P.B.I. on I-90...

You are like Horatio Cane, dude...  Mystery solved.
