Building a Fly Rod - General Question

I would like to attempt to build a fly rod this winter, this is something I really want to do since getting turned on to fly fishing, but I am hoping to spare myself problems if someone could point me in the right direction and not to hell....sorry, couldn't resist that last comment. A video or book or info to help me get started is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Doug

It's not all that hard if you stick to glue-up building.  Rodbuilding.org is a good web site.  Dale Clemens book is very good and Andy Dear has a DVD out.  All og them will get you going in the right direction.

I bet someone on here could turn you a very, very cool reel seat.

    Doug,

I didn't mean me.  I am far closer to Homer Simpson than Homer Formby when it comes to wood working.

I was referring to CR500.  He is a true artist.  On the custom rod he made for me, he made the reel seat from 10,000 year old Mammoth tusk -- ans scrimshawed a Mayfly onto it.  Truly wonderful work.

I also have a wading staff that he did and he works as well with wood as bone.

Consider contacting him at MSO Custom Rods when you are ready for a real seat.

hey doug, i built a rod last winter with an older fella that owns a fly shop in the south hills.  ran me about $100.  that blank i used was a g.loomis that factory-made would have been well into the $200 range.  i'll get you info if you'd like.

Send me the info when you get a chance. I have been busy and haven't been on much lately.
