Stream/River fishing smallies ?

Any tips on fishing faster flowing water for smallies ?

I plan on bouncing a tube along, casting a fluke, maybe a spinnerbait or hard jerk bait ... the basics should net me something ??? But any tips would be helpful

I never really fish moving water for bass but i have very limited time this weekend. So i have a spot i can hit real quick like at some point over the weekend.

Thanks men !
BB

I remember about 10 years ago I fly fished for smallies on the Shenandoah in Virginia. It produced big numbers, but the size wasn't there. Maybe there weren't any bruisers there to catch. Anyway, good luck what ever you try.

When hell freezes over, I'll fish there too.

    Brian:

When I went to college in Williamsport, PA there were some great fast streams to fish in that area.  I had my best luck with a #2 Mepp's Spinner in Brass or Silver.  Lots of fun floating the stream in a raft and try it with an ultra light rod w/ 2/4 lb. test line.

How do you fish a tube in fast water? on a light jighead or texas rigged weedless? I assume you would cast upstream and just try to keep the slack out of your line as it comes down. I have been having trouble setting the hook with tubes when fished weedless. I am also new to fast water smallmouths.

I'll be using a heavier tube jig head (gets inserted into the tube) and just bounce the bottom, or throw near any structure.

i use tubes with 1/8oz insider jig heads pretty much all the time in any current for smallies. To fish a tube in the current, I fish cast it upstream of any current breaks and drift it along with the current, jigging it if I feel i feel the tube tumbling along the bottom. Alot of these places tend to be snaggy, so plan on going through a few lures.

While I doubt it could beat a tube jig for Smallies, I typically toss the 'usual' 1/16 or 1/8oz jighead with a small black or brown curly tail grub.  I kill 'em in rivers like the Alplaus, and I just use a heavier head if I think the lure is being swept away in the current, etc.  I like to creep it along on rocky bottoms.

I tend to think the Smallies assume the grub is a helgrammite or small crawfish, as opposed to a baitfish.

Spinners, Rapalas, and other 'mid column' lures will get them too, of course.

Good luck Brian- we don't hear about your 'stream exploits' to often!

    Go get 'em!

Brian -   I've been hitting them with 2" grubs, and 2-3" tubes.  Dark blue, green pumpkin, red/chartreuse are my go to's. I like the 1/16 oz for 2" or 1/8 oz jigs for 3" baits, and use a split shot if current is real fast. If you know where the holes are, I cast upstream of them and let the tube fall to the bottom and jig it up as it occasionally hits bottom.  I don't care much if it snags, theyre dirt cheap to replace. I love the spinners too but you'll also get white perch and you get real irritated losing $3 spinners all day. If the current is slack, senkos on a weedless hook work for me also.
Ha! Me giving Bassin Brian bass catching tips is like giving Pavarotti karaoke advice.

Brian - not sure where your fishing - average depth of river or how fast the flow but your best bet a box of tubes / in-line spinners (Mepps Blue Fox) / and small grubs. This will cover ya from top to bottom.

    Good Luck my Friend !

Well that pretty much sucked  ... i got up early, had to put an extra layer on (only mid 30's when i left) !!!!

I was comfortable and looking forward to the stream challange. I get my waders on make the short walk only to find muddy nasty water.
That's when i realized i should have stayed in bed . Not sure what the deal was, we didin't get hardly any rain the past week, in the late spring and
early summer it's really clear/green water. Maybe it just dosen't get the good flow like earlier in the season ???

I made some half-hearted cast and got the heck out of there.

I don't mind not catching fish, it happens. But i was bummed and just not into it when i saw the conditions.

Oh well, i'll get'em next time around.
