Hex Nymph

Got all my egg patterns tied so I started on these hex nymphs and thought I'd pass it along. Works pretty well for me - hope it will for you. It's kind of a lengthy step by step so bear with me. After tying a couple you can tie these in about 10 minutes each. I know it's kind of a long tie, but so what. What else is there better to do other than fishin. Hope this helps anyone who wants to try it out. Anyway here it goes:

Heres the Hex:

1. Materials:

2. Begin by tying in the "aftershaft" or fuzzy fibers from the bottom of a hen hackle feather. Tie these in for the tail.

3. Using the color of your choice, tie in the micro tubing and run it up the hook slightly. Tie off.

4. Tie in about 12 strands of pheasant tail then using mink thin cut zonker material, cut off a very small bunch of hair, pull out the guard hairs and tie in a small bunch of this fur along side of the hook. Do this on both sides. I like using this material for the gills but I'm sure some other material would work just fine. Also tie in another strand of micro tubing about 12" long.

5. Using lead wire cut on a sharp taper at both ends tie in two short pieces along side of the hook shaft. The pic shows how far to run it up the shaft. This creates a flat body when seen from the side and a tapered body from the top and bottom.

6. Run tubing up the hook shaft slightly, tie off, tie in another small bunch of mink hair from the zonker strip on either side of the hook and pull over the pheasant tail. Wrap over the tail with two wraps of thread, then one with the tubing. This covers the wraps.

7. Continue to do this three more times, working your way up the hook shank.

8.  Tie in a thin strip of Medallion sheeting and two small hen hackles, stripped on one side. Tie in by the tips.

9. Tie in the eyes. Then using dubbing of your choice (I would imagine perhaps ice dub might look good but here I used regular dubbing), wrap forward to the eyes and cover the eye shaft by one figure eight around this shaft. Finish in front of the eyes.

10. Wrap the hen hackle forward - one hackle at a time. Tie off the stem in front of the eyes.

11. Pull medallion sheeting strip over the hen hackle and over the eye shaft. Tie this off in front of the eyes.

12. Trim off, whip finish. I like to add a coat of epoxy to the wing case and black head cement to the finished wrap in front of the eyes.

As seen from the side:

Very nice tie and tutorial.  Gimme the old fashioned Spring's wiggler, works well and simple enough to tie so that even I can tie it. Again, well done.

Glad I could help. I'm drivin the wife nuts with all the tying I'm doing lately. She got ****ed the other day when she stepped on a hook I dropped a while back. Wasn't too bad -- didn't penetrate to the barb so I don't really understand why whe got so upset.

Wife steppin on dropped hooks, my lab getting into my grade 2 & 1 necks - it all goes along with tying flies I guess. But the best one happened to me about 15 years ago before I had my basement remodeled. My tying area was downstairs where my computer room is now. I had it layed out just right with pegboard up and all my materials hanging just right. And I had alot of materials!!!! I was out washing my truck when the hose kind of got stuck under the tire. I pulled on the hose to free it up and no luck. So I pulled real hard and the water suddenly just slowed to a trickle. I went around the truck to see what the problem was and I saw that the outside faucet was pulled out of the house about 2 feet. S#%T!!!!! I went in the garage and into my tying area and water was flying all over the place!!!!!!! I shut the main off and saw that I broke the cold water line to the outside faucet that was right next to my tying area. I had all my materials hanging on the outside clothsline drying for two days!!!!! You should have seen that act!! She was really ****ed at that one!

    >>you can tie these in about 10 minutes each<<<

Sheesh. Sometimes it takes me 10 minutes to get the steenkin hook debarbed, sharpened, positioned in the vise and the thread tied off.

Very nice tutorial though. If I had gills I'd eat it. Thankee.

It takes me ten min. just to put the hook in the vise, start the thread, fix a drink and turn the TV on.

flyguy - sorry i didn't notice that on the pic of materials - it's not too clear what the hook is. It is a Mustad 9671 streamer style , size 8. Any type of streamer hook would do though.

Thanks for the kind words guys - I hope this tutoral helps everyone out. As far as the lead wire - like I said if you cut the tail end of the wire on a sharp taper and fit this taper into the "bump" caused by cutting off the tailing material, there is a smooth transition for the micro tubing..then leave the "eye" end run long and cut it to the correct length. In other words - cut two pieces about 2 inches long, tie in the tail end, run the thread up to the point shown and cut off the excess. It's easier this way and it won't want to "roll" on the hook for you. Easier to control.

Is there any way we can put all the "How to" threads into one thread for people to look under?  I hate seeing all these pushed to the back as more posts come up.  A stickied thread would be a great asset for those looking to get started tieing.

I think that's a great idea! Moderator - if it's not too much problem let's do it!
