Simple swinger set-by...

here is a basic step-by
I make things up as i go and tech is what i steal from others

*Feedback/suggestions are welcome*

AJ sz3 black hook
14/0 black
med silver tinsel
green floss
fine silver rib
seal sub
pheasant rump
Blue eared pheasant

Attach tinsel, floss, and rib
measure tag end to front of the hook, eleminates the uneven bulk at an atach point

advance tinsel
the tinsel is to give shine to the floss
without tinsel the floss would be direct on a black hook, and have a dull look
*my tinsel wraps are sloppy and tag is not flat*

advance floss
untwisting the floss makes a uniform body easier
advance rib

dub seal substitute

pick hackle
brown is pheasant rump
green is BEP

tie in hackle by tips
pull fibers back as you palmer forward
repeat as needed
i used 1 Brown and 1 green

Who cares if the tag and tinsel isn't perfect! The fish will still hit it. Good stuff kev. Love the green BEP. I'm jealous, I only have natural.....for now.

most stuff will be at any fly shop
fishusa carries the hooks, mylar tinsel, and rib
sheer 14/0 thread is great stuff... strong with no bulk
seal substitute dubbing was my choice... but you can use anything... i use it to keep the hackle from pressing flat

phesant rump plumage is cheap on ebay
BEP can get pricey... i had a guy send me 2doz to try

Blue eared pheasant... the green feather
its a substitute for heron (illegal)
    long soft/non-webby fibers

the regular golden pheasant... brown feather
is much stiffer... reason for using it under, helps keep the green from pressing flat

I was thinking about this last night.  6 weeks away from half decent fishing.  I got a bunch of stuff I want to spin up for early season, and I think I'm going to fail at having the flies I want to fish.  Will go with what I can get done, I guess.

Well, thanks to fly guy, now I have to mess with rabbit spun in loops.

I got a bunch of intruder type variations in color in my head.  Those things just swim so well it's ridiculous.

And some random spey-ey type of flies.  I'm not even sure yet.  Just sick of yarn flies in general.

A few of my loser friends don't tie, so I usually hook them up, to a certain extent.  They are going to be out of luck this year.

Kev, I have worked with wool for quite sometime and think it adds to a fly's profile. Normally I tie it in similar to tying egg flies except I tie a piece on top and bottom at same time, a couple tight turns then pull back. One tech. I learned was to comb out the ram wool(while still on the hide), check it out. I may have a video clip tying this one

Really like your rabbit collared flies, That fly tied with an orange lite brite dubbed body and fl. yellow rabbit collar would be great for erie sthd.

I really like rabbit for collars on erie sthd flies, mostly tubes.  Rather than use a dubbing loop for the rabbit collar I prefer to reverse tie it, fold it back over and tie it down. This forms a nice collar and I find it easier to "lock in" the fine rabbit hair this way.

Arctic fox tail under fur also is great for sthd fly collars and I tie it in the same way as rabbit.

Very attractive fly, no doubt that'll take erie sthd. Resembles several atlantic salmon shrimp flies that I have tied, Ally's shrimp and Ally's cascade just to name a couple.

You should post that fly on the spey pages, bet the NS, NB  atlantic salmon guys would love it.

Going to tie some cascades as tubes, yellow version and orange version, using arctic fox, for NY erie sthd. Will post them.

The Ally's shrimp and the cascade are very highly regarded shrimp patterns in eastern Canada and I believe would be very good for erie sthd as well.

Swinger, thanks for posting your "shrimp" and getting me intrested in trying this style fly  on the local "steelbows".
