Juniata Flys???

I'm gonna be making a trip over to the J next week and since I just started fly fishing I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for some patterns that work well on the Raystown Branch and the Big J.  I'm particularly looking for hellgrammites and crayfish patterns.

Thanks

    Berk,
It really depends on where you are planning to fish, and what time of day. If you are way upstream on the little J then there may still be some hatches coming off this late. If you are further down, (below Tyrone) then it's almost limited to streamers, except in the evneing when you can still get some dry action on non-specific drys or mosquitos. Terrestrials fished close to the banks and under overhanging grass and limbs can be productive too. The raystown branch has the cold water so big streamers seem to be the way to go. except sometimes in the evening a hatch will come off in the shaded areas.
Really not much help was I? I'm dealing in generalities here.

Sounds to me like your targeting smallmouth, I've always had good luck with wollybuggers(black), chartruse and white Clouser, and on top try hairbugs and poppers, sneaky pete is one of my standby poppers.

Berk,  flyfishers pardise has a web site ,if you go under the archives there is a pattern for furry foam crayfish thats worked well for me, have had good luck on the olive and tan patterns. Its weighted and I tend to lose a few but have take bigger fish on it.

    Berk,
a size 6 to 10, if you go on that site the pattern is under the article smallmouth and crayfish good read and talks about how this time of year the smallies target young of the year crayfish which aren't real big, don't get me wrong a smallie will eat a big crayfish especially if its a softshell, but there is an abundance of 1 to 2 inchers that are fairly easy prey, I'm probably heading over next weds. and friday depending on water level and weather I'll let you know how I make out.
