Jewels of the Allegheny National Forest

Jewels of the Allegheny National Forest

The rivers browned, the streams well drowned
the past few days quite rainy
With my Diamondglass, I head thru tall grass
to search for jewels of the Allegheny
The hemlocks roof, the laurel guards
the banks of the small water creek
And like a miner, searching for something finer
its native jewels I seek

The going is tough, there’s no denying
Some attempts are down right brutal
And to reach the lairs, knowing there
well, some attempts are down right futile
But with patience and grit and cautiousness
upstream I cast onward
My dry floats high, thru likely lies
and I receive a just reward

The sun breaks thru, the boughs of pine
I continue casting dries
The fish hold tight, not a dimple in sight
but I know I can make’em rise
I watch my dry, before my eyes
even for a second I’m afraid to blink
For the take is in fractions, it's all reactions
there’s no time to think
If I miss the set, I’ll regret
as the empty line takes to air
For there’s branches to grab, boughs to nab
leaving me in despair

But I’m here for the fun, and when rightly done
Seeing fish rise within my sight
I can nod, holding my bending rod
knowing I’ve done it right
Though the long day intriguing, causing fatiguing
I stroll to the van for rest
And grabbing a beer and toasting a cheer
successful in my quaint jewel quest

Nice fish. Thats the kind of trout fishing I like. A Red Man pouch is the perfect size for storing your limit of native brookies. I'll have to keep that in mind next time. Skoal cans are good for pureed brookies... Just a pinch between your cheek and gum.

    Beautiful fish.
