im not sure if this is your style but...

I would use the 10' noodle, 12-15 lb main line, 8-10 lb test leader. with a 10ft rod, you may break off some fish with the 8 -10 lb leader but you should get more hits than if you were using a larger leader. I use ashima fluorocarbon as leader material, ive never had a problem with it.

    Stealys4me,

Fish for the salmon with the same setup you use for steelies.

Use 8lb leader material for the fish further up river, and you can usually get away with a leader up to 15lb down low in the river. The active fish won't be too worried about the line.

Fluorocarbon is NOT needed. The river is usually a tea color anyways, so the visibility of mono is cut down very well.

FRESH egg sacs or skein will be your best bet, and egg patterns are a close follow up.  Get those fresh eggs with the scent milking in the water and hold on. I've had days with eggs that were like catching steelies in Erie. Don't be surprised if you start hooking up consistently with steelhead too. The end of September last year was the best steelhead fishing I had all year on the Salmon. Skamania and Fall Run fish mixed in. Still chrome 10 miles from the lake.....Beautiful.

You guys have me fired up. I have never been to N.Y. but I have spent plenty of time catchin steelies in Erie. I am going in mid October. I understand the streams in N.Y. are very busy with fishermen. Is it possible to use a pin up there?

    Lip,

The Salmon River was very empty up until this past weekend. There are quite a few guys on it right now. There are places you can still use your pin if you walk and are willing to fish some not so good water. Mid October is pretty much peak time, so expect lots of fishermen, especially this year with the lower flows keeping most of the fish out of the river until the urge gets too strong. This is true for most other streams in NY at the moment.

By the time you get there, you will have salmon, steel, and big browns in the rivers and streams. Can't ask for more.
