I'z finishing up some trim for the bathroom last side.  Dad forgot the beltsander at home.  I told him about you coming a good ways and forgetting your rod.  Made him feel a little better.

I've been fishin' out your way on a smaller springish creek.   Thickest sulphur hatch I've seen in years.  Nice fish too.  We may visit Penns for the green drake show on Saturday.

I gotta cancel on the penns trip. I've got a bunch of flies I gotta tie for the shop, and my real job is keeping me too busy to get them done. Looks like i'll be at the tying bench all day on Saturday

Fished Jurassic Park on Monday.  Weird night.  Nothing really happening -- the darn clouds went away about 6 PM and the temperature actually went up.  Turned what could have been a grat evening into a yawner.

Had to resort to the dark side until about 7:30 -- caught 5, nothing special.

Very few bugs, there were some fish on the surface sporadically and I managed two.

At about 10 minutes till dark the fish started popping everywhere.  The first fish I caught was about 20.  Of course it was the whole way across the river and I had zero leverage so I had to let him play out against the drag.  Two casts later, another decent fish -- about 18.  Same story -- long distance and long fight.

By the time I landed it, it was too dark to do anything except stumble out of there.

Thinking about hitting the River Monday evening.  Any takers?

I'll actually be in SC on Monday afternoon for an appointment.  Plan on leaving from there to hit the river, so I won't have computer access.  If you are going, I'll be at Alan's sometime around 5.  We can branch out form there if you decide to go..

    Dano,

The size was good -- although there are many bigger, much bigger fish, in Jurassic Park.  The timing was lousy.  With only a small window when the fish were going nuts before the onset of complete darkness, if those would have been the normal Little J foot longs, there would have been time for another 4 -5 fish.  As it turned out, there wasn't.

Its really not complaining.  Like I said, just weird.

    Dano,

During the hatches, I tend to want to be about the numbers rather than the size -- unless it is a really, really good fish.

My cookie crumbles with the rise and hooking, not the size and fight for the most part -- knowing that I did everything right enough to fool the fish.

That being written, there are some fish that reside in the Little J that makes me forget about catching numbers, but those fish are measure in feet, not inches, and while not rare, rather uncommon.

    I would take a 25 - 30 fish evening of 10 -14 inchers on dries any time over 1 20 incher.

The real magic comes when the nice fish (16 - 20) come during the sporadic rises before the main activity gets going and then the numbers come as fish start popping everywhere.

So to answer your question, a good evening is 20 plus risers with a nice fish or two thrown in.  A great evening is 30 plus with a jumbo.

Yep.  I sure am.  It is part of the reward for living here.  Much like putting up with 10 feet + of snow is the penalty for enjoying what the Erie area has to offer.

Last night was a spoiler, though.

I bet I didn't see 50 bugs from 7 PM (when the rain finally quit pouring down) until well after dark.  There was absolutely zero surface activity until 8:30 in one of my favorite pools.  And then there were only 4- 6 risers.  I missed one, broke off another (bad knot on my part, I am sure) and let another wrap around a rock and pull free.

At 9 PM, I moved to a pool near where I was going to exit the river.  There were about a dozen fish one the surface, but it was way too dark to tell if there was a lot of bug activity.  If there was, it was right near the surface because none could be seen in the air.

I caught two foot longs on consecutive casts and that was all she wrote.

Decent thunderstorms moved through last night and the time on the river was one of the most humid I can remember.  Hopefully those contributed to a real ho-hum night and not that the bugs are done.  I would like to get another week or so in before having to switch to fishing pepper grains at the butt crack of dawn.

Yeah- just when things start to get good those evening thundershowers start here. I've withstood some real bad ones under trees just hoping for it to stop so I could get 10 or 15 min. of fishing in before dark (if the bugs cooperate)....
