What kind of panfish?

Hi... I was fishing Lake Wilhelm a few days ago, and caught 2 sunfish-type fish that I have never seen before. They were dark green, had a very large mouth (for a sunfish-type), had a blue gill marking, like a bluegill, but it was longer and higher on the gill plate. It also had a dark blue-ish spot on both the dorsal and anal fins. Wish I had taken a picture...

From researching it, I'm thinking it sounds like a Warmouth Sunfish. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Thanks,
°Egghead

Egghead, did it look like this only darker?

This is a green sunfish. Wilhelm has a ton of them in it and we usally catch a lot when fishing for crappies in thick timber. They have a large mouth like a warmouth and have no problem hitting a large fathead or a curly tail. Warmouth have been caught in lake wilhelm before, but are pretty rare there.

Here are some more pics of darker colored green sunfish. The first one at the very top of my post has the markings on the dorsal and anal fins that you described. The two pics below look darker like the green sunfish I catch in Lake wilhelm. I'll bet you probably caught a greenie not a warmouth.

I agree with carphead. The last couple years it seems they have come more popular there. I didnt know what they were until I seen the chart at the marina one day. Ive caught them on 3-4 inch walleye lures. They tend to attract to things that seems impossible for them to eat.

I would bet you are right... more like the darker picture you shared. Pictures I saw online looked more like the warmouth, but your photo of the darkest one is probably what I caught.

Thanks for the info... are they just as yummy as their bluegill cousins?

I'm not sure......I've caught a bunch, but never big enough to fillet IMO. I'm sure they are tasty though.

Funny, I was just going to post this up and ask the same question. Caught this little guy Friday & couldn't figure it out. I was starting to think it was a pumpkin seed/bass hybrid. lol. I was calling it either a)Large mouth pumpkin..or..b)Little Pumpkin bass.

Anyway, here's a pic I snapped. This it?

Whatever that fish is that pork shows a picture of I have always called them a warmouth correctley or incorrectley They always seem to be around rocks i.e. dam breasts, causeways & spillways etc.
I would say they are the most aggresive fish in pa waters they seem to bite anything that comes near them or goes by them. Whatever they are they are widespread in north and south western pa.

I'm gonna fish more and work less.

You might wanna take him over to the marina and see if hes a makes the record for this year in panfish. Lol. Seems like all the panfish at willy are in that size range, hopefully it comes around soon.

I am quite sure these fish are warmouth, they tend to have color differeces in different water.  I put some in my farm pond several years ago and they have got nice and fat, they look like a blugill with big mouth.......children love them as they fight hard and bite nearly anything( they like those tent catapillars for bait) most fish don,t.  We have cleaned and eaten them can,t tell from a blugill.

The ones in geneva swamp and game lands have many color variations also.
