Looking for a 9 Weight set up

Hey Guys

I am looking for a 9 weight rod and reel. Any suggestions? Was looking at the G Loomis GL2 on the site, looked pretty solid, but i've never casted a G Loomis.  I heard that Orvis has a deal that if you buy a rod, you get a reel of the same price for free..Anybody hear about this?  Thanks in advance.

Gloomis makes a nice stick. They arent pretty, but they cast/fish well. I have a GLX native run 9wt, which is a cannon. It'll throw over a hunderd feet with no problem.

I have the Orvis T3 in an 8 wt. I love it and it looks great too. It's landed pike up to 44" and can punch flies through the wind with no problem.

Thanks for the input guys, going to hit a few local shops and check them out, even though I'm still favoring that Orvis deal...I should have put this in the original post but I am not really looking to spend more than about 300-400$ total for a rod and reel.  Who sells Sage in the SW PA area?

if youre looking for a 9wt... i'm assuming youre going after large fish in bigger water (ie not PA steelbows)

do the orvis deal TLS rod and the LA biggame
365-400 for the rod and a free 250 reel

    don't dump 350 on a rod and spent 50 on a reel

    my .015$
as you get into the heavy gear the rod is less important than the reel (small stream setups are the opposite)
you're not looking to lay down finesse casting with a 9wt and your not going to be hand stripping fish
the name on your $350 rod won't mean $hit when you $50 reel is smoking and overrunning your line
why do you think big reels are like 800+ paired on a $250rod

Drake is right about being able to throw this rod over 100 feet.

But you have to get a running start and throw it like a javelin.  If you don't the reel makes it start to cartwheel and the whole rig hits the ground after only about 20 feet or so.

The best way is to throw the rod is reel first. It doesnt tumble in the air if the heavy end is in front.

100 feet is only 50 people. i would imagine, with a fresh gale coming off of lake erie, it wouldn't be too hard to throw over the crowd of people at the wall of walnut on a good day!!

If the river continues to come down, do you want to go fishing?

    St. Croix Ultra-legend 9 foot 9 weight
    G-Loomis GL3 9 foot 9 wt
Beulah SWITCH rod  10.5 feet  9/10 weight   THIS IS A ROCKET LAUNCHER

And the guys are right........if you spend the dough on a very good rod......make sure you match it with a very good reel.......just as important as the rod when fishing for larger fish.......probably more important to have a great drag system

Fly Logic reels are nice......great drag:  FLP 890--  it holds a ton of backing.......made in USA
    Find a used ABEL

Just make sure the reel has a reliable drag......a buddy once purchased a Redington 8 wt outfit for salmon....I took one look at the reel and said you are going to be in trouble.......the reel was crammed....and tiny....it was fried on his first hookup........FUNNY now.....sad at the time........I had to make the trek back across the river and retrieve a backup reel for him......OKUMA airstream 7/9   cheap and pretty good reel.........

I'm not much of an Orvis man........but seems you might not be able to pass up that deal.......

    2B,
I haven't broke my GL3 on a king yet (if that means anything) so for what it's worth, it's a good rod for the money.

The old Abel big game reel is nice but if it you dunk it, the drag slips. At least, mine does.
Not sure this is the case on the newer reels.

Yea, I'd find it hard to pass up that deal.

I knew there was a reason that you are a better caster than me -- I've been doing it backwards all this time.
