Another one bites the dust.

Last week came around and was out evenings and mornings roosting and watching birds. Got on a big group of birds in the same area. Saturday morning approached and was in the woods early with my old man. We set about 80 yrds from the roost, birds did what they were supposed to but Pops got caught moving and it was over. I raked 50 yrd path sunday in hopes of sneaking in closer this morning without making a noise. Got in real early and hunkered down against the tree. The woods woke up and 6-8 birds were gobbling their heads off. Had a hen roosted with in 35 yrds out in front. As I watched the birds, they finally were getting ready to come down. I did a couple soft tree yelps and then a fly down cackle that couldint of sounded better. The birds started pouring down one after another right in my face. I had 15-20 birds bombarding me like I was goose hunting. They all landed within 5-25 yrds of me. Had birds all around me and decided I had to make something happen before I got busted. Jakes running around in circles right in my face made it tough to pick out a good bird, picked one out and let him have a wad full of No. 5's to the face at 15 yrds. Did a flip and was done. 9" Beard and 1 1/8. Overall the hunt was textbook and I wish I had bought another tag.

went out this morning with a buddy from ohio. first light they were gobbling everywhere. had one come into about 40-50 yards but couldn't see him he was on the other side of the brush and busted us.  went around to the other side of the woods and walked over the noll in the field to see about 6 birds at least 4 gobblers. set up and called a few times one came about 30 yards and my friend whacked him.  nice bird about 7-8 in beard. got him plucked and ready for the spit.

I was just thinking about that today, I'll be down soon.  The fishing may not be as good when I get down but the courses will be nicer and those beverages will be flowing.
