Not totally, but yes, I still plan to focus on other species more this spring. Got a sauger and a decent sized smallie on Saturday.

About ten years ago I found a dead lamprey up from the 711 bridge. I put it in a cup and took it with me. On the way out to Donegal lake, I seen the stocking truck sitting along the road so I stopped. Asked the fish warden about it and he said the one I had was common in the Loyalhanna. He asked if he could have it so I gave it to him.

It's been a while, but I've got another post on my blog about my first outing with a cheap eagle claw glass rod.

Nice article.  I got one when they were reintroduced last year and paid 17 for it.  Maybe the flyshop didn't need the higher profit like Walmart did.  They also made it in 6'6" for lines weights 2 through 6.  I have the 6'6" for my son and I use it from time to time.  Just wondering what weight line did you use on the 7'?  You said it was an SA line but didn't say what weight you used.  When I use the 6'6", I personally like using a 3wt line for small stream dry fly fishing.  My son wants a 6wt line on it, since he is still learning, it helps him to feel the load of the rod alot easier.

It was the WF5F that came with the kit (and hence the reel). When I get a reel just for this one, I haven't decided whether it'll get 4 or 5, but I dont think I want to go to 6...5 put a nice bend in it, though, and I might throw the reel & line from my 3 wt on it just to see how it acts. I'm thinking I might use a DT_F Cortland Sylk. I tried it once and liked it alot.

One thing I DO need though, are a few more furled leaders. I've got one...and it's pulling triple duty on this rod, the 3 and the 5 weight.

I don't like the 6 either but it helps the boy out.  As long as he likes it he will continue to use it.  I use a 3wt Wulff Triangle Taper.  I love how the line roll casts in tight situations.

You buy or make your furled leaders?  I bought mine and I think I have 10 of them. All different lengths and types for a 3wt, 5wt, and a 7wt.

Never tried the sylk line, but I want to.  Many people recommened that line for the bamboo rod I have.

Buy. People who make em say its easy, but I dont know if I've ever made it through reading all the directions...confuses the ever-loving $hit out of me. I got 2 of the BlueSky ones, but the lighter one, I mangled real good before I worked out a good connection system (40# PowerPro, nail knot to the tippet end w/ a perfection loop tied small). I still have and use the 3-5wt one I got last winter.

Definitely let the kid use what works. Eventually, he'll be out on a windy day and then he'll start to appreciate the situational advantages of a faster rod. I too prefer a slow, relaxed pace, but on a windy day I like being able to punch a fly out into the wind. Luckily, my 3wt Avid seems to do that for me as good as a 3 wt can be expected to. If its too windy for that, its probably a good day to just stay inside and tie anyway.

great read on the eagle claw fiberglass.
it shows you don't need much money in gear to raise a trout, just the know how!!

If I managed to catch one, you apparently dont even need much of that!

But yeah, I'm glad it "works". Been having trouble with the hookset on such a slow rod, though. I'll get it eventually.

Also, I'm kind of in the process of a rod & reel shuffle that should be complete by steelhead season. This rod, with a cheap (but not totally hosed, like this) reel will make a nice setup to get a friend involved. Its easy to cast, great in close, forgiving, and if they manage to break it, it isnt like I just watched a few hundred bucks shatter. Now that I have a few rods, its nice being able to invite a friend along and when they say "id like to, but I dont have any of the stuff", now I can tell them I have "stuff" they can use, they just need to bring themselves.

Finally! New Posts! 2009/09/18 08:31:18 (permalink)
After a long hiatus, I've made a pair of new blog entries:

First, a review of a new pair of shoes I got that work as an everyday shoe, a walking/running shoe, and a good choice for wet wading!

Second, I posted a tutorial for my woven-body woolly bugger that I'm tying for Skip's steelhead bugger swap. I have this tutorial posted in the appropriate section here as well.
