blade sharpeners

Has anyone tried those small hand held auger blade sharpeners?  Any comments,good or bad.  sam

    Used one for the first time saturday and it worked fine. The problem was my auger has a split blade so it to longer to sharpen. Wasn't drilling very easily and after it blew through the ice.

    make sure you sharpen them just right if you knock off the angle even alittle youll just cut snowcones if you sharpen them id suggest taake new blades with you just in case

    My 8in lazer hand auger was getting a little rusty after a couple of years. So I wire brushed it off and spraypainted it. Well I went to Canada for a friends wedding and we stayed to fish Simco. That auger with brand new blades all painted up cut terrible. I have played with it since and I think I found the trouble. The paint under the blades was thick holding the blades just a might crooked and thats all it takes.  So the angles are very critical.

    I have tried to sharpen them before with poor results.  Blades are not the expensive, suggest getting new ones and putting them on.  I end up putting new blades on about every other year depending how much I get out and how hard the ice is.

     I agree with changing the blades, but I didn't have an extra set with me. I happened to have a hand sharpener that I bought on clearance 2 years ago after ice season. It waqs taking forever to drill through the ice prior to sharpening the blades. After I sharpened them it took less than 30 seconds to blow through 10-11 inches of ice. If you read the directions on the sharpener they say to put the short sharpening stone facing the top of the auger and the long stone downward. Also says it is VERY IMPORTANT to keep bootom stone on against bottom og blade while sharpening (my guess this is due to angle being so critical). It took me less than 5 minutes to sharpen. I would imagine just a few times across the blades with the sharpener is all it would take kinda like a chain saw.
